Job description

This is a fantastic opportunity to work for a forward thinking and dynamic transport authority located in the heart of the North West. Warrington is at the centre of transformational plans for transport, with an ambitious programme of transport and place-making schemes, alongside a planned new Northern Powerhouse Rail station in the town centre. All this is working towards net zero and making Warrington a more prosperous, greener and inclusive place.

With excellent transport connections, good schools, vibrant retail centres and masses of open space and parks, Warrington is a great place to work, live and visit. The role will be based in our purpose-built modern office within the vibrant Time Square development, nearby the award-winning Warrington Food Hall and Market, with excellent rail links from many areas and reduced cost parking for staff.

The role

To support our growing work programme, we are looking to appoint a permanent transport planner who can develop their career with us through formal training and on-the-job experience. This role would suit a university graduate or someone who has some experience in the industry. The role is structured to support progression through the grades to Senior Transport Planner. Formal training and on-the-job mentoring will be provided to support professional development.

You would be working within a team of transport planning professionals who already have an excellent record of delivering innovative and brave transport projects. With a proven track record of delivery, Warrington continues to punch above its weight in attracting new transport investment with projects such as Warrington West rail station, an all-electric fleet of buses alongside bus priority measures, next generation active travel infrastructure, electric vehicle charging points including a new car club, and transforming streets to be greener and more attractive.

We have ambitious plans for the future and this role also represents a rare opportunity to shape significant future investment. Warrington is part of the UK Government’s Devolution Priority Programme, and you would be working alongside our partners towards the creation of a new Combined Authority for Cheshire and Warrington, and deliver projects with elevated levels of funding. Our upcoming programme of work includes developing a mass transit strategy, planning for a new Northern Powerhouse Rail station alongside significant development, delivery of new active travel and integrated transport infrastructure, and policy and strategy development to respond to emerging structural challenges and opportunities.

What's needed?

The successful candidate would be playing key roles in high-profile transport projects together with the development of transport strategies and bids for funding. If you have the right skills and a passion for creating better places and transport networks we’d love to hear from you.

No candidate will meet every single requirement – if your experience looks a little different from the job description and person specification, and you think you can bring value to the role, then we’d love to learn more about you.

We provide a supportive, inclusive environment, where you’ll be encouraged to shine and make the most of your unique talents. We’re serious about building a bold forward thinking workforce so we will be investing in your skills and empower you to success.

As well as a competitive salary, working for us means you get:

  1. 26 days annual holiday - raising to 31 after 5 years of service (pro-rata)
  2. Access to our attractive and competitive benefits package
  3. Access to our Health & Wellbeing Programme
