We have a great opportunity to join our underwriting team as a Trainee Underwriter, with the opportunity to obtain a CeMAP qualification and progress to a qualified underwriter role.
This role will be based out of our Head Office in Carlisle; we operate a hybrid working policy allowing the successful candidate to work flexibly between the office and home as required once the required level of competency has been attained.

The role
Reporting to the Underwriting Manager, the key responsibilities and duties in the role are:
- Processing mortgage cases from receipt of applications to payment of mortgage funds.
- Reviewing packaged mortgage applications to ensure all necessary information is included to enable a lending decision to be made.
- Assessing and appraising valuation reports.
- Working towards and achieving required CeMAP qualifications within required timescales.
- Evaluating and establishing the level of risk presented by a mortgage application and providing decisions in principle, approvals &/or declines according to lending policy, criteria and mandate, to ensure that lending you approve is within the Society’s risk appetite.
- Working within your mandate, documenting clear rationale for approval or decline decisions and communicating these reasons clearly.
- Operating as a team player within the Underwriting Team and wider Society, building strong working relationships to support delivery of Society strategy.

- An understanding of the end-to-end mortgage process.
- Confident decision-making and communication skills (verbal and written).
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Strong organisational skills.
- A logical thinker able to balance capacity demands and service achievement without compromising standards.
