The Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Trainee Technical Packaging Designer. This entry-level role offers the opportunity to learn and contribute to the development, design, and optimisation of packaging solutions for a variety of products. Under the guidance of experienced designers, the trainee will gain hands-on experience in technical packaging design, including materials selection, structural design, and sustainability considerations.

Key Responsibilities

1. Assist in Packaging Design: Support the creation of innovative and functional packaging designs that align with client specifications and brand guidelines.
2. Technical Drawings & Prototypes: Learn to develop technical drawings and create prototypes using CAD software and other tools.
3. Materials Research: Collaborate with the team to select appropriate packaging materials, considering durability, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness.
4. Testing & Quality Assurance: Assist in testing packaging designs for functionality, strength, and compliance with industry standards.
5. Project Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including production and supply chain, to ensure packaging meets operational requirements.
6. Sustainability Focus: Contribute to initiatives aimed at improving environmental impact, such as reducing material waste or transitioning to eco-friendly alternatives.
7. Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate records of design iterations, specifications, and test results.

Qualifications

• A degree or diploma in Packaging Design, Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field (or relevant work experience) - desirable
• Basic understanding of design software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Adobe Creative Suite).
• Interest in packaging materials, structures, and production processes.
• Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
• Good communication and teamwork abilities.
• Willingness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Skills (non-essential)

• Familiarity with sustainability principles in packaging design.
• Basic knowledge of manufacturing processes such as die-cutting or folding.
• Experience with 3D modelling or rendering software.
