Job description

The Traffic Investigation Unit (TIU) is part of the Criminal Justice Services (CJS) department and is responsible for:

  • Road Traffic Collision administration and Investigation
  • Third Party Allegations of Driving standard administration and Investigation
  • Officer Accidents
  • Third Party Disclosure Reports
  • Inputting Police Led Prosecution Files

The Traffic Investigation Unit Supervisor provides leadership and management oversight of Road Traffic Collisions and Road Traffic Offences including, those that occur on our motorway network. This includes the administration and prosecution of all fixed penalty notices and education courses as an alternative to prosecution.

The Traffic Investigation Unit Supervisor is responsible for maintaining high quality levels of service to members of the public and stakeholders.

Overall line management responsibility for the recording, administration, investigation and finalisation of all non-life-changing road traffic collisions.

Key responsibilities

  • Ensuring that the teams are working to the Forces Road Traffic Collision Policy and Information Sharing Agreement which will be renewed by the manager on a yearly basis.
  • Develop effective and efficient processes and policy in order to provide a good service to the public and partner agencies.
  • Develop and maintain key performance measures in line with the Policing Plan.
  • Working towards the Regional Road Safety Strategic.
  • Resolving complaints from members of the public relating to Traffic Investigations.
  • Compliance with support from the Service Improvement Team requests for Freedom of Information in relation to Road Traffic Data.
  • To facilitate the listings of Traffic cases in court and ensure relevant disclosure is served on defendants.
  • Ensuring enquiries are carried out expeditiously in accordance with the investigation policy and relevant legislation.
  • Delegated authority from the Chief Constable for the service of documents in relation to Notice of Intended Prosecution.
  • Ensure we are promptly dealing with court orders and other lawful requests for third party information in accordance with the Information Sharing Agreement.
  • Ensuring evidential integrity and working with PLP, CPS and other departments or agencies.
  • Liaison where appropriate with the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, Camera Enforcement Unit, Force Traffic and any other internal department.
  • Responding to general enquiries from victims and witnesses regarding the progress of their incident ensuring the Victims Code of Practice and Witness Charter is adhered to.
  • Responsible for managing the budget and income generation.
  • Proactively positively promoting the force strategy and Diversity and Inclusion plans.
  • Ensuring health & safety is adhered to.
  • Ability to provide key metrics to ensure performance and assurance.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Previous experience of leading a team.

Desirable

  • 12 months experience of line management within the Criminal Justice Environment.
  • Experience of working with Road Traffic Legislation, managing teams through change, introducing new IT systems, working with partner agencies such as Crown Prosecution Service, His Majesty's Courts and Tribunal Service.
  • An ability to handle sensitive and confidential information, whilst demonstrating the utmost integrity and professionalism.
  • To display a good level of interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Ability to be flexible and work in a team environment.
  • Analytical skills, and the resilience to manage a busy workload.

Vetting: Successful applicants will be required to pass Recruitment Vetting and Counter-Terrorism Clearance scrutiny prior to commencing their role, this will include a full background & financial disclosure as part of the vetting process.

Hours: Working hours 3 days per week between the hours of 8am until 4pm. Working days can be negotiated.

Location: Lloyd House, Birmingham.
