The Role

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Technical Support Officer to join our Highway Operations Team. The Highway Operations Team is responsible for planning and organising repairs to the highway and responding to enquiries from our residents and road users.

In this role, you will provide essential technical support to the Highways Engineering function. This role involves undertaking technical assessments and activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage team mailboxes, triage, and respond to requests and enquiries with minimal support, escalating complex or unusual requests to the team manager or lead engineers.
  • Plan and prepare communication and consultation activities with the public, councillors, contractors, colleagues, and businesses.
  • Review and update processes and systems, including the website, ensuring appropriate use of case or site notes and other records within information sharing protocols and record-keeping policies.
  • Ensure compliance with the Council’s Comprehensive Equality Policy and all relevant Health & Safety legislation, undertaking risk assessments and preparing Health & Safety plans as necessary.

Valid driving licence and own transport, or be able to provide alternative, suitable method of travel is an essential condition for this role.

This position is currently based at our Castlewood offices in Clevedon. Please be advised that this office will be closing in 2025. Consultation is currently underway to determine the new location for colleagues based in Castlewood. This will be at Weston-super-Mare or within North Somerset.

Work Style

At North Somerset Council, we offer a hybrid working environment based on four distinct work styles. Depending on the role and personal circumstances, you will fall into one of these categories. However, please note that during the induction period, it may be necessary to spend more time in the office to support your learning and development. We are flexible and open to discussions about your preferred working style, and if you wish to be in the office more frequently, this can be negotiated.

This role falls into the category of Select Workstyle Type which means you can expect to work in the following way:

  • 2-3 days in the office.
  • Works both from home and the office, depending on the task at hand.
  • Training is provided to help balance work-life and manage time effectively, with an emphasis on communication for team touchpoints and planning in-office days for collaboration.

About You

We are looking for an individual who is passionate about highways and customer care, and who possesses the following skills and experience:

Essential Criteria:

  • Vocational qualification or experience to NVQ3 or NVQ4 or above, relevant to one or more service areas such as geography, business administration, or accounting.
  • Ability to prepare and present evidence information confidently.
  • Knowledge and understanding of technical standards, safe working practices, and legislation for service areas, including Local Government procedures in working with partner agencies.
  • Ability to manage and organise own work to meet agreed deadlines.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Significant practical experience within a public sector service area, providing a variety of technical skills and a sound understanding of relevant standards, legal responsibilities, work practices, and processes.
  • Knowledge and understanding of technical standards, safe working practices, and legislation for service areas, including Local Government procedures in working with partner agencies.
