About the role

The Physics Teaching Laboratories are looking to recruit a qualified technician to join a friendly team of technical staff responsible for the smooth running of this busy teaching environment within the department. The teaching laboratories cover both BSc and Masters courses as well as providing spaces for outreach activities and Global Summer schools. We have our own hackspaces, both Electronic and Mechanical, that are open to use from both staff and students and these areas are also fully supported by the technical team.

What you would be doing

As a technician in the teaching laboratories, you will be responsible for setting up, calibrating and repairing a wide variety of experimental equipment. You will be responsible for the maintenance and supply of laboratory equipment and stock within the laboratories. It is essential that you can select new equipment from suppliers for use in the laboratory as well as selecting parts for bespoke equipment assembled. The post holder gives technical support to demonstrators, students and other staff as needed to enable the laboratories to run smoothly and efficiently. During first year undergraduate projects the post holder supports students and project supervisors by advising on equipment and experimental setup.

What we are looking for

We are looking for an experienced laboratory technician with the following attributes:

  • Minimum BTEC Higher National Certificate
  • Good knowledge of computer systems, software, hardware and programming
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Some scientific background knowledge
  • Strong practical skills and experience in using prototyping equipment for both mechanical and electronic products
  • Highly organised
  • Effective communication skills
