Teaching Fellow in Critical Care/ Anaesthesia and Medical Education

An opportunity has arisen to appoint an individual to this exciting post, in collaboration with Imperial College Medical School, and the Critical Care Directorate of London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust.

This is a full time post commencing August 2024 for an initial period of one year (extendable by mutual agreement). The post is appointable at CT3 level or above of F3. The post holder will be encouraged to gain formal certification in Medical Education (e.g. PGCert, PGDip or MEd).

The post holder will assist with the delivery of teaching to undergraduates placed within the department. Some of the time will be dedicated to delivering clinical skills to Imperial College medical students and curriculum development. The post holder will also be expected to deliver high fidelity simulation to Foundation trainees in the Trust. Clinical sessions in anaesthesia and critical care can be arranged subject to mutual agreement, to maintain clinical skills.

In accordance with recent Home Office guidelines, the Trust will primarily attempt to fill the post with doctors from the UK/EEA or those with verifiable permission to work in the UK.

This post is allocated to teaching year 3, year 5 and year 6 students at London North West University Healthcare Hospitals. There will be, depending on experience, time allocated for postgraduate teaching and simulation teaching for both undergraduates and postgraduates at all levels. It is expected for the successful candidate to build up a robust timetable to accommodate all teaching involving critical care, anaesthesia and medical education at London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust.

The post holder will work in collaboration with Dr Tariq Husain in the delivery of teaching to Year 5 students on the Critical Care Module. The successful candidate will work with the Critical Care consultants within the trust to deliver high quality bedside teaching on the two intensive care units. Problem based learning, round table tutorials and one to one teaching of practical skills will also be expected during the duration of the students placement. In addition to the Critical Care Module, a 3-week Specialty Choice Module in the Care of the Critically Ill patient can be arranged for year 5 students.

Dr Daniel McNaughton is the Lead for the Year 3 Anaesthetic Module that runs over 20 weeks each year accommodating approx. 60 students and is also the Supervisor for Specialty Choice Modules in Anaesthesia. The students are allocated to theatre lists with Consultant Anaesthetists and SpRs for the majority of the time. Collaborative teaching would be expected of the successful candidate.

Teaching Year 6 students in the skills lab and during induction week. Teaching Year 3 students during Induction week, and skills lab sessions every Thursday. Helping with year 3 MOCK exams, OSCE Exams and recruiting patients for final year PACEs. Taking a lead role in co-ordinating and teaching year 5 Critical Care placement students. There are also opportunities to work with the Critical Care Module leads to improve the curriculum. Liaising with the Postgraduate department for simulation sessions for postgraduate doctors.
