BSL Teaching Assistant

We are currently recruiting on behalf of a mainstream school in Stockton-on-Tees for a BSL Teaching Assistant to provide 1:1 support for a deaf student. The ideal candidate will hold at least a Level 2 BSL qualification and have a passion for supporting students in a mainstream classroom setting. This is a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference in a student's educational journey while working within a supportive and inclusive school environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide 1:1 support to a hearing impaired student, ensuring they can fully access the curriculum and participate in classroom activities.
- Assist in the implementation of strategies outlined in the student’s EHCP (Education, Health, and Care Plan).
- Support the student with communication needs, including using BSL to facilitate their understanding of lessons.
- Help the student develop key skills in language, reading, writing, spelling, and mathematics.
- Foster an inclusive environment that encourages the student’s independence, confidence, and social integration.
- Collaborate closely with the class teacher to adapt lessons and materials to meet the student’s needs.
- Monitor the student’s progress and contribute to regular reviews and feedback regarding their development.
- Assist with the preparation of learning materials and resources tailored to the student's learning style.
- Support the student during extracurricular activities, school trips, and other out-of-classroom events.
- Encourage positive behaviour and support the student in managing their physical and emotional needs in line with the school’s Behaviour Policy.
- Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance your skills and knowledge.
Essential Requirements:
- Level 2 BSL (British Sign Language) qualification as a minimum.
- Previous experience supporting students with hearing impairments, ideally in a mainstream setting.
- A positive, patient, and proactive attitude with a commitment to inclusion and student success.
- Strong communication and organisational skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, other staff members, and the student’s family.
