An exciting opportunity to join our rapidly growing UK/Australian cross-border tax advice boutique firm in Reading!

We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic Tax Manager to provide high quality, accurate and timely UK and Australian tax technical advice, review of UK personal tax returns, and preparation of complex UK tax returns, as part of Rosekirk LLP’s UK/Australian cross border tax advice offering.

The role will offer progression to Senior Tax Manager, for the right candidate.

The candidate must possess a high level of UK private client and/or expatriate tax technical knowledge and have sound written and oral communications skills and a demonstrated ability to identify and understand complex tax issues.

No previous Australian tax experience is required. However, the candidate will be expected to undergo further training to learn the Australian tax system. On the job training in respect of the Australian tax system will also be provided to assist the candidate’s learning and development.

The candidate will mainly be required to provide tax advice on:

  • UK income tax, employment taxes, capital gains tax, inheritance tax and trusts.
  • Australian income tax, capital gains tax and trusts.

In addition, the candidate will be required to develop and manage client relationships, review UK personal tax returns, and assist in the training and development of more junior staff with regard to the preparation of UK tax returns.

All employees are required to be actively involved in the firm through business, staff and/or culture development initiatives.

Staff are also required to assist in growing the firm’s fee base by being involved in business development.

Duties and responsibilities

Key Accountabilities

Providing written tax advice to clients

  • Provide UK and Australian tax advice to clients through written reports which are clear and concise and appropriate to the client’s level of technical knowledge.
  • Ensure that written advice highlights the key issues of relevance to the client and provide solutions or recommended actions, which are clearly stated and easy to understand and follow.
  • Prepare written UK and in with training and experience, Australian tax advice.
  • Prepare tax calculations.

Reviewing UK tax returns

  • Review UK personal tax returns.
  • Provide timely feedback and on the job training to more junior staff regarding the preparation of UK tax returns.
  • Handle new client enquiries for the preparation of UK tax returns.
  • Manage client relationships (particularly relating to UK expats).

Financial management of client work

  • Provide quotes to clients and manage budgets to ensure maximum recoveries.
  • Monitor the completion of work to ensure that it remains within both time and budgetary restraints;
  • Draft the bill for each job, calculate the write-ons/write-offs - establish the reasons for the latter through discussion with staff and raise any issues with the Senior Tax Manager/Partner and, if necessary, the client. Follow up the collection of money as required;
  • Complete detailed daily timesheets.

Core duties

  • To meet clients’ needs by developing an understanding of their tax affairs and by providing sound tax solutions and advice;
  • Prepare high quality, well researched technical tax advice which identifies and addresses the client’s needs while appropriately balancing risk;
  • Provide advice and support for the other partners in the firm in relation to tax issues;
  • Plan work and complete tasks within time and budgetary restraints;

Build referral networks locally and internationally to gain work for Rosekirk LLP, Nexia Canberra and other Nexia International member firms.

Business Development

  • Build on existing networks in order to refer work back to Rosekirk LLP and Nexia firms locally, in Australia and internationally;
  • Assist with the writing of tax articles and delivery of seminars
  • Identify other services that Rosekirk LLP can offer and relay information and ideas to the client;
  • Identify the potential for value added work and seek assistance where required from specialists within Rosekirk LLP and Nexia Canberra.

Client Liaison

  • Take a pro-active role in liaising with the client by phone or in person, to ensure that the Senior Tax Manager builds the client’s trust and confidence in Rosekirk LLP and Nexia Canberra;
  • Ensure that any commitments made to clients are followed up and met in line with the expectation of the client;
  • Ensure that the relevant client partners are kept informed of any issues, which may affect the client relationship.

Personal development

  • Keep up to date on UK and Australian tax technical issues such as changes to legislation and/or its application and changes in reporting requirements;
  • Ensure that all action points assigned are completed and meet deadlines;
  • Participate effectively in tax team meetings and assist with technical content during tax training.

Communication

  • Effective written, oral and interpersonal communication.
  • Ability to explain complex tax technical issues to clients, tax officers and other members of staff.
  • Ability to present tax technical training content.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively with other members of staff and with external clients.

Organisation and Time Management

  • Ability to prioritise, organise, track and complete a range of complex tasks within limited time frames.
  • Ability to use initiative, judgement and discretion when dealing with competing priorities and to manage tasks effectively, while communicating any issues with the Senior Tax Manager/Partner.

Skills and experience

Academic Qualifications

  • Candidates who can demonstrate strong UK tax skills and hold UK tax qualifications such as CTA/ATT/ACA/ACCA.
  • Degree qualified (Preferable).

Work Experience and Skills

  • 5+ years’ experience in a UK Chartered Firm or equivalent from a private client, expatriate or mixed tax environment;
  • Sound UK tax technical knowledge and strong experience in UK personal tax returns;
  • No previous Australian tax experience is required, however, candidates with Australian tax experience (in addition to their UK tax experience) will be given preference.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office suite of programs.
  • Ability to learn additional software packages in particular, Digita Personal Tax Software (UK – Thomson Reuters) and XPM.
