Job Description:

Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc.

When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other. We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it.

Job Title: Control Systems Development Engineer, Controls & Embedded Software Development Engineer, Systems Engineer – Controls & Control Systems Verification Engineer

Location(s): Peterborough, UK (Other UK locations available)

Flexible working arrangements will be considered for this role, in-line with the needs of the business. This may include the opportunity for part-time working and/or hybrid working model with flexibility in working hours and location (allowing for a combination of remote and on-site working).

Who is Caterpillar? What do we do?

With 2022 sales and revenues of $59.4 billion, Caterpillar Inc. is the world’s leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, off-highway diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines and diesel-electric locomotives. For nearly 100 years, we’ve been helping customers build a better, more sustainable world and are committed to contributing to a reduced-carbon future. Our innovative products and services, backed by our global dealer network, provide exceptional value that helps customers succeed. Caterpillar does business on every continent, principally operating through three primary segments – Construction Industries, Resource Industries and Energy & Transportation – and providing financing and related services through our Financial Products segment.

What will Caterpillar do for you?

From day one, you’re set up to thrive at Caterpillar: helpful training, relatable mentors, global experience, competitive salary package, work-life balance and the growth opportunities you expect with a Fortune 100 company. You power our success and we are committed to empowering yours. After all, when your work can impact the entire world, it’s important to do work that matters.

When you join Caterpillar, you are joining a team of makers, innovators and doers. We are the people who roll up our sleeves and do the work to build a better world. We don’t just talk about progress and innovation. We make it happen. And we are proud of that, because it helps our customers build and power the world we live in – the roads, hospitals, homes and infrastructure. Without a dedicated workforce, Caterpillar could not effectively meet our customer’s needs. Join us now.

The Division

The Integrated Components and Solutions team in the UK has some of the most exciting engineering opportunities within the Caterpillar global organisation, working on the integration of electronic control systems within multiple Caterpillar products. Integration of the latest Electronics and Electrical technology helps differentiate Caterpillar products from its competitors, by enabling exceptional performance and value to the customer.

Our engine systems control air and fuel delivery with millisecond precision, power delivery and response, and manage aftertreatment systems (including regeneration), to maximise performance and minimise exhaust emissions.

Our battery management systems manage and control the performance of machine battery packs, providing state-of-the-art SoC, SoH and SoF algorithms, delivering necessary functional safety features and managing charge and discharge, as well as integrating to other system components such as powertrain controllers, chargers and machines controls.

Our integrated machine systems control all aspects of construction machine operation (engine/transmission or full electric powertrain, hydraulic systems), provide the human-machine interface (operator controls and information displays), and constantly monitor and communicate position, operation, diagnostic and prognostic information to enable machine automation, improved productivity and enhanced serviceability.

Job Role and Responsibilities

You will be part of a team responsible for developing Electro Mechanical Control Systems using quantitative methods to solve problems for internal and external Caterpillar customers. We are recruiting for a number of different job roles and, depending on the role you are considered for, responsibilities may include:

  1. Collecting customer requirements and developing technical specifications for electronic features.
  2. Developing electrical system architectures and solutions to meet technical requirements.
  3. Defining control algorithms and developing software to implement these using model-based development techniques.
  4. Verification planning and testing of electronic features utilising simulation, SIL, HIL test benches and/or machine.
  5. Troubleshooting and resolving electronics/control system issues encountered during build and test of products.
  6. Investigating control system performance issues, identifying root cause, innovating, implementing and testing solutions and product improvements.
  7. Contribution to FMEA, functional safety and product compliance reviews.

Basic Qualifications

Strong technical background (good technical degree preferred in mechanical, electronic, electrical, control systems or automotive engineering) though other qualifications/experience will be considered.

Top candidates may also have experience with (depending on the specific position):

Off-highway machine/engine/EV control system development (or comparable automotive, marine or military vehicle control systems)
