Role Overview and Responsibilities

The Supply Chain Support Engineer provides hands-on technical expertise to strengthen supplier performance and ensure the quality, manufacturability, and robustness of externally sourced components and assemblies. This role supports supplier onboarding, technical validation, issue resolution, and continuous improvement across the supply chain. A secondary responsibility includes supporting purchase price variance (PPV) reduction through technical insight and cost engineering.

This is a full-time position working a 4-day week based in Barnstaple, North Devon. There is a requirement to travel to supplier sites on a regular basis.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Comply with all HSE requirements related to the role and work towards a zero-harm culture
  2. Lead technical problem-solving for supplier-related quality and delivery issues
  3. Assess manufacturability and technical risk of components during supplier selection and onboarding
  4. Provide engineering expertise in support of procurement and sourcing decisions
  5. Collaborate with suppliers to ensure understanding and compliance with technical drawings/specifications
  6. Support the qualification of new suppliers, including audits and capability assessments
  7. Drive improvements in supplier technical performance through root cause analysis and development actions
  8. Provide input to make-versus-buy decisions and participate in design-for-cost initiatives
  9. Support supplier-related NPI activities, including technical feasibility and first article validation
  10. Monitor and advise on obsolescence, material risks, and technical change management
  11. Provide input into RFQs from a technical and manufacturability perspective
  12. Identify PPV opportunities through technical reviews, alternate materials, and cost-down initiatives
  13. Participate in cross-functional teams for supplier reviews, audits and technical escalations

Qualifications, Skills and Attributes

Core Requirements

  1. Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Manufacturing or related Engineering discipline
  2. Strong understanding of manufacturing processes (e.g., machining, PCB assembly, magnetics, electronics)
  3. Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and BoMs
  4. Experience in supplier-facing technical or engineering support roles
  5. Knowledge of quality and compliance systems including AS9100, FAIR, PPAP desirable
  6. Familiarity with DFMEA, root cause analysis, and corrective action tools
  7. Proficient in ERP systems and general supply chain processes
  8. Effective communicator, with ability to influence internal and external stakeholders
  9. Proactive, pragmatic, and collaborative approach to technical problem solving
  10. Willingness to travel for supplier visits and technical reviews
