GSL Education are looking for dynamic and adaptable Substitute Teachers to work across vibrant and inclusive secondary schools in Portsmouth, Hampshire.

As a Substitute Teacher, you’ll play a crucial role in maintaining continuity of learning when regular teachers are absent. This is an ideal position for qualified teachers, Early Career Teachers (ECTs), or experienced cover supervisors who enjoy variety and want to make a meaningful difference in multiple school settings. You’ll be delivering pre-planned lessons, managing classrooms effectively, and inspiring students to stay engaged with their learning. Strong behaviour management and the ability to quickly build rapport with students and staff are essential in this fast-paced role.

Whether you prefer short-term assignments or more consistent, long-term placements, we have flexible opportunities to suit your availability.

What you have to do as a Substitute Teacher:

  • Deliver pre-set lesson plans to students across a variety of year groups and subjects.
  • Supervise and manage classroom behaviour in accordance with school policies.
  • Ensure students remain focused and engaged throughout the lesson.
  • Adapt to different classroom environments with confidence and professionalism.
  • Build positive relationships with students to support their learning and behaviour.
  • Liaise with school staff and provide feedback on student progress or behaviour.
  • Maintain a safe, inclusive, and respectful classroom environment.
  • Encourage student participation and foster a love for learning.
  • Support school routines including start-of-day, break, lunch, and end-of-day duties.
  • Uphold school safeguarding policies and ensure the well-being of all pupils.

Substitute Teacher Requirements:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), ECTs, or substantial school-based experience.
  • Prior experience working within a secondary school setting.
  • Experience working with children with SEND is an added bonus.
  • Excellent classroom management and adaptability.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of safeguarding and child protection.
  • A valid enhanced DBS certificate on the update service (or willingness to apply).
