Job description

Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is a distinctive, unique institution, rooted in the Liverpool City Region and with a global presence. Our students and staff, past, present, and future, are the beating heart of our city and can be found in every corner of every industry and community. We couldn’t exist anywhere else and have shaped the city in which we belong. Working with the people of Liverpool to improve lives and support communities is at the heart of why we were founded and why we exist today.

The School of Humanities and Social Science (HSS) consists of six programme areas, employing over 70 academic staff and delivering an excellent student experience to more than 1,300 students. The School has a strong track record of producing high-quality research and creating a supportive and innovative teaching experience for our students. This is an exciting time to be part of a growing Social Science offering as we seek to ensure our International Relations and Politics, Sociology, and Media, Culture and Communication degree areas work in collaboration on research ambitions and in the development of a cross-disciplinary curriculum (from Level 3 to Level 7) that appeals to both home and international applicants.

We are now seeking to appoint an outstanding individual to lead the People, Politics and Communication (PPC) subject area on a full-time, permanent basis. This is a great opportunity for the right candidate to join a vibrant School and take the next step in their leadership development.

The search is open to outstanding scholars of any field of Sociology, International Relations and Politics, Media, Culture and Communication who can demonstrate clear strategies around the current HE environment and the teaching and research challenges faced. You will sit within the senior management structure of the School and be able to think and act strategically to deliver on the shared vision of the School, Faculty and University.

You will be a dynamic and inspirational individual with a proven track record in leadership and academia. With excellent communication skills, you should be able to articulate plans to further strengthen the research, teaching and impact of the subject area in the local, national and international arena. You will have the opportunity to devise plans to develop a strong PPC identity, establish key priorities and action mechanisms that forge collaboration and effective and efficient working that enhances staff well-being and a sense of shared purpose.

In return, we offer an excellent benefits package including generous annual leave entitlement, pension scheme, induction, and development support as well as family-friendly policies.

This is an exciting time to join the university as we deliver the LJMU Strategy 2030 and its vision of LJMU as an inclusive civic university transforming lives and futures, by placing students at the heart of everything we do.

If you feel that this is the role you have been looking for and your skills and experience can make a real difference at LJMU, we look forward to hearing from you.

Informal enquiries may be made to the Director of Humanities and Social Science, Dr Alex Miles: a.miles@ljmu.ac.uk
