TRAINING OPPORTUNITY for Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) - Health Visiting September 2025 intake.

OPTIONS:

  • Fixed Term contract/secondment opportunity
  • 3x Posts available- full time 37.5 hours a week (fixed term for 12 months) or part time 18.75 hours a week (fixed term for 24 months)

Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen with Gloucestershire Health & Care NHS Foundation Trust for sponsorship of NMC registered practitioners to undertake the MSc/Post Graduate Diploma in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN). This will lead to registration as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Health Visiting) with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

The aim of the programme is to prepare SCPHNs with the knowledge & skills to provide leadership and innovation in community health. The wider goals are to improve population health, in particular the health of children and families, and to prevent illness and accidents. SCPHNs will have the community capacity building skills to support the development of community based health and well-being services.

Specialist Community Public Health Nursing is a one year full-time, or two year part-time course combining taught modules at the University of the West of England (Bristol) and a clinical placement within Gloucestershire Health & Care NHS Foundation Trust.

Job responsibilities
  • To take responsibility for identifying and meeting their own learning needs with support from the university and their Practice Assessor/Supervisor.
  • To work as part of the Public Health Nursing team, providing specialist advice and care on an identified caseload to enable children, young people and their families to be healthy and stay safe.
  • To work as part of an integrated multi-disciplinary team around the child, young person and their family providing specialist advice in relation to health needs.
  • To provide evidence based advice and care to children, young people and their families founded on assessment of need.
  • Agree a programme of learning and negotiate clinical learning objectives with the PA/PS which will enable the embedding of theoretical learning in practice, and reflect the value of practice-based education.
  • Develop new public health and leadership skills and show integration of theoretical knowledge with knowledge and experience derived from practice.
  • Maintain contemporaneous, factual records with the child or young person the focus of all assessments and actions in accordance with Public Health Nursing service guidelines and organisations clinical recordkeeping policy.
  • Be proactive in the identification of risk factors and signs and symptoms of child abuse and act according to organisational and Gloucestershire Safeguarding Childrens Partnership protocols at all times.
  • Provide signposting to other services and agencies, referring onwards in a timely manner, and liaising appropriately seeking first any necessary consent.

  • Able to demonstrate clinical knowledge relating to children & young people.
Experience
  • Demonstrates an understanding of public health nursing in application.
  • Has an understanding and awareness of Safeguarding children.
  • Understanding of Government policy in current child health programmes and impact on local needs.
