Student Health Visitor - Community Services

(Specialist Community Public Health Nurse in Training)

Every day is different working as a Health Visitor (Specialist Community Public Health Nurse) with various responsibilities which include: home visits/virtual consultations for health need assessments, promoting uptake of immunization, conducting child developmental and health reviews, running support groups for parents and working in collaboration with a range of local children agencies such as Early Years, Children Centres and Third Sector Organisations.

A fully funded and salaried training place is available now (Agenda for Change band 5 - maximum will be mid-point). The Health Visitor career path offers lots of opportunities to progress, with salaries ranging from Agenda for Change bands 6 to 8.

Applications will be accepted until 9th April 2025 for the training programme beginning in September 2025 with Kings College London and London South Bank University.

Main duties of the job

This is a training post; you can apply for a 12-month full-time course. The course comprises of 50% academic and 50% clinical placement in accordance with the University, NMC, and Trust regulations.

As a GSTT SCPHN student, you will be allocated a Specialist Practice Teacher and receive additional support from the Practice Development Lead.

You will play a fundamental role in the delivery of the Healthy Child Programme, promoting child development through parental support, safeguarding children, preventing social exclusion, and tackling important public health issues.

With an established Agile Working System, Health Visitors have the opportunity to work flexibly in the community and are a crucial part of the healthcare team. It is a diverse role that involves being part of a wider team that provides you with support as you work to improve the health of local families.

Application Process

For admission, there will be two stages to the recruitment process:

Stage 1 - Submit a written application by 9th April 2025 at Midnight.

Stage 2 - Interviews will take place in the last week of April and the first week of May 2025.

Interviews will include a presentation and a 1:1 interview. Only successful shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview.

Job Summary

The post of Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) Sponsorship is a development post building on existing knowledge, skills, and competencies as a qualified nurse/midwife to achieve a higher level of practice resulting in an academic qualification as well as a recordable/registerable qualification with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

The programme will enable SCPHN students to learn and work towards gaining the standards of proficiency for entry into the NMC register as Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN). In collaboration with the Universities, we have the responsibility to provide an adequate learning environment and create opportunities that will enable the student to develop knowledge, skills, and competencies to take on the role of a qualified Specialist Community Public Health Nurse at the end of the programme. Gaining the required knowledge, skills, and competence will enable the registered SCPHN to exercise higher levels of judgment, discretion, and decision-making in clinical care focusing on four broad areas:

  • Clinical practice
  • Community Engagement
  • Leadership in clinical practice

Main duties and responsibilities:

The fundamental responsibilities of the post holder are to attain the academic credentials and the clinical skills required to practice as an NMC registered Specialist Community Public Health Nurse on a defined pathway. These are summarised below:

  • To fulfil the requirements of the Specialist Community Public Health Nursing programme by attending university course dates and practice placement days in accordance with University regulations and successful completion of the course.
  • To work with the Specialist Community Practice Teacher to develop the skills and competencies to achieve NMC Registration Standards for Specialist Community Practice.
  • With the support of the Specialist Community Practice Teacher, to link the theoretical knowledge gained through the university programme to the practice situation.
  • To demonstrate an understanding of current and emerging National, Regional, and local healthcare legislation, policies, and guidelines as they pertain to the chosen pathway.
  • To develop/build on skills of caseload and team leadership and management.
  • To work within University Regulations pertaining to academic work and student conduct.
  • To work within employing organisation policies as they pertain to the relevant clinical setting.
  • To work within employing organisation policies relating to employee responsibilities.
  • To proactively seek learning opportunities and be creative, adaptable, and innovative in response to complexity and uncertainty.
