Job Summary
Strategic Command (UKStratCom) Information Manager role is part of a busy 4* Headquarters. The demanding and operational nature of the Headquarters means that this role will require a significant level of flexibility and professionalism.
UKStratCom is one of the four front line military commands (alongside Navy, Army, and Air Force) which conducts joint operations and generates, develops, and manages key enablers. It has approximately 22,500 military and civilian personnel deployed across the UK and worldwide. UKStratCom is a 4* HQ and a Top Level Budget (TLB), tasked with developing and preparing an integrated Joint Force for current and future operations. It has a unique structure, with a Headquarters that works above, and with, a number of subordinate organisations, including Permanent Joint Headquarters, Defence Intelligence, Defence Digital and MOD A Block. UKStratCom also has management and operational responsibility for the Overseas Bases of Gibraltar, Cyprus, the South Atlantic Islands, British Indian Overseas Territory and British Defence Support Unit Singapore.
Job Description
Strategic Command is expanding the IM Team. The Information Manager role will work within Strategic Command HQ IM team.
The Information Manager is the professional lead for Information Management (IM) within a 4* Headquarters.
They will provide the necessary SME advice and guidance to staff ensuring suitable support is provided to meet the requirements of a 4* HQ.
Supporting circa 600 civilian and military personnel within Strategic Command.
We are looking for an Information Manager (IMgrs) with exceptional people and problem-solving skills.
They will be dealing with day-to-day Information Management problems which happen in a large headquarters.
This post offers a unique opportunity to directly contribute to Strategic Command Headquarters, whilst collaborating with a diverse range of stakeholders.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week and will require the majority of time to be in the office to support the staff of a large headquarters.
Strategic Command is going through a significant transformation programme which aims to improve the way the Command conducts its business and delivers for Defence and the nation. As a consequence of this, all posts within Strategic Command Headquarters and in time the wider organisation, are/will be subject to review and potential changes as we continuously improve across the period of the transformation programme. These changes may be minor or could be more substantive and will generate new opportunities. Throughout, the Command’s transformation programme is committed to following the MOD’s framework on managing and supporting people through the change process and places an emphasis on early and open consultation and engagement with the Command’s personnel and Trade Unions.
Person Specification
The IM Team is a small team, and we aim to work flexibly to support each other.
Key Responsibilities are –
- Provide Information Management Support across the departments within Strategic Command Headquarters within Northwood HQ.
- Support, develop and maintain divisional IM/IX ‘best practice’ in line with Ministry of Defence CIO and Joint Services direction and guidance.
- Maintain and support all IT assets within Strategic Command.
- Administrate and improve the Strategic Command SharePoint Sites. Engage with the teams on how to improve IM ways of working.
- Create and or amend MODNET Official and MODNET (S) accounts for new or existing Strategic Command personnel.
- Support the distribution of MODNET electronic devices for Strategic Command Staff.
- Support Strategic Command Headquarters in new IT projects.
The successful candidate must perform in the position quickly and without the need for significant development therefore should have experience of working in the Knowledge and Information Role, seeking to build on their existing skillset.
Be a self-starter, who is confident with decision making and is able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Good communication skills are paramount as you will need to initiate, develop and maintain effective relationships with a broad range of stakeholders.
You must have the ability to manage competing priorities, assess information rapidly, seek clarity or additional information where necessary and articulate needs or processes in a way that is understood by the diverse stakeholder audience, bearing in mind that often such audiences have very limited or no Information Management experience. The role does require you to be in the office to support the staff of the Headquarters.

Desirable
- Experience in iHub or within Knowledge & Information Management.
The successful candidate will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements. This will require you to hold or be eligible of achieving Security Cleared clearance (SC).
Training
Incumbent should be prepared to obtain the required mandatory training and specific training relating to the job within 6 months of taking up the position. These include, but not limited to: O365 Upskilling (3 day), Defence Information Management Passport (online), Information Managers Course (5 Day course at Shrivenham) and Knowledge Information and Management (KIM) Pathway.
Previous experience in MS Office Products such as Microsoft SharePoint is highly desirable.
