Job Description

Please be advised that as we are migrating to a new recruitment system, this role will close for applications on Sunday 23rd March as part of the migration. It will then re-open on 31st March and close definitively on 5th April.

The Opinion department of The New York Times is seeking a strategic, creative and data savvy audience editor who is passionate about journalism in all its forms for a staff editor role in the London office. You will play a key role in the editorial operations of the department, working in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment on high visibility surfaces like The Times's home screens and social media accounts. This editor will have their hands in myriad aspects of the organization, workshopping copy, analyzing data and programming various products and platforms The Times appears on. Applicants must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends and some holidays.

Key Responsibilities

  • Represent the diversity of voices of Times Opinion on all of our off-platform channels, exhibiting excellent judgment and audience-sensitive framing
  • Help improve homepage line-ups based on editorial judgment, breaking news, analytics, department priorities and diversity of viewpoints
  • Write and A/B test headlines
  • Track on and off-platform success through story performance analytics, engagement rates and other metrics
  • Write captions and post on our off-platform channels, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, WhatsApp, Bluesky, X and Threads
  • Support the curation and production of newsletters, including Opinion Today
  • Optimize individual pieces for search, including advising on SEO headlines and URLs
  • Work with editors on display copy and best practices for search and social channels, including framing pieces for specific audiences
  • Craft and pitch copy for push notifications and email alert
  • Collaborate with our video, audio, design and graphics teams on creating promotional assets for multiple platforms
  • Contribute to the department's morning audience note

Requirements

  • Strong news judgment and interest in Opinion journalism
  • Ability to remain agile, make decisions and meet deadlines under high pressure
  • Open to working with a diversity of voices
  • Experience working in a fast-paced news environment
  • Sensitivity to visual design and user experience
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Proven record of data-driven decision-making
  • A devotion to the highest standards of accuracy, precision and verification
  • Keen sense of the social media and search landscape with experience writing social media posts and in-depth knowledge of SEO best practices
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, adherence to deadlines and time-management
  • Discretion in handling sensitive material
  • Willingness to work nights and weekends
