Job description

SQL DBA - GBP450 per day - Outside IR35 - Fully Remote - 3 months initial contract with extension.

My client, a global engineering organisation working toward delivering clean, affordable energy, is looking for aa highly experienced SQL DBA to join them on a contract basis.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the planning, coordination, and implementation of SQL database projects, with a strong focus on Azure SQL technologies, in collaboration with various stakeholders.
  • Manage relationships with third-party vendors, ensuring SLAs are met and that Azure SQL environments are optimised for performance and reliability.
  • Design, configure, and optimise SQL Server and Azure SQL settings to meet specific application requirements.
  • Secure database access in line with industry best practices and security standards, with a focus on cloud environments.
  • Ensure data recoverability using SQL tools and Azure-specific recovery options.
  • Conduct performance monitoring and tuning for both on-premises SQL Server and Azure SQL databases to ensure optimal performance.
  • Design and implement SQL Database Servers at scale, supporting data processing for business-critical applications, with a particular focus on cloud integration.
  • Integrate SQL Server and Azure SQL with various infrastructure components, including servers, storage, backup solutions, and monitoring systems.
  • Produce and maintain comprehensive documentation that governs and records configuration and design decisions, particularly in hybrid and cloud environments.
  • Clearly communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences, with a focus on explaining the benefits and challenges of Azure SQL.
  • Present and justify design decisions, including pros and cons, to stakeholders at all levels, with an emphasis on cloud strategy.
  • Develop and implement strategies for complex systems, particularly those involving Azure SQL Database, SQL Managed Instance, and hybrid cloud solutions.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant technical strategies, policies, standards, and best practices, with a strong focus on cloud adoption.
  • Participate in vendor selection processes, providing comparative analysis and recommendations, especially in the context of cloud-based solutions.


Required Qualifications:

  • Extensive experience with Microsoft SQL Server, including the latest versions (up to SQL Server 2022).
  • Strong expertise in Azure SQL technologies, including Azure SQL Database, SQL Managed Instance, and cloud integration strategies.
  • Proven ability to design, configure, and optimise both on-premises and Azure SQL environments.
  • Expertise in database security best practices, particularly in cloud environments.
  • Experience with disaster recovery planning and data recovery techniques, including Azure-specific options.
  • Strong skills in performance monitoring and optimisation for both on-premises SQL Server and Azure SQL databases.
  • Ability to document and govern configuration and design decisions effectively, with a focus on cloud environments.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information to diverse audiences, particularly around cloud-based solutions.
  • Experience with cloud platforms, particularly Azure, and familiarity with both PaaS and IaaS models.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing high-impact, technically complex projects, with an emphasis on cloud migration and hybrid environments.
  • Experience with vendor management and SLAs, particularly in cloud service agreements.
