About the role
As one of our SQL DBAs within the Run and Operate chapter, you will be helping the team manage the data platforms environment in a secure and optimised manner. As a member of the team, you will be tasked with supporting the current database instances and providing resilient database solutions to the various challenges that arise using SQL Server and related technologies on a Windows platform.

The successful candidate will in the long-term help migrate solutions from on-prem to Azure. The role will include validation of planned changes to ensure that they comply with best practice and will also involve working with the Tesco Mobile Cyber Security Team.

You will be responsible for:

  1. Be a team player - live the Tesco Mobile values.
  2. SQL server database administration using SQL server 2017/2019.
  3. Configuration of SQL Server Instances.
  4. Upgrading Instances to the latest versions (currently we are migrating all our SQL server 2012 databases to SQL Server 2019).
  5. Creating Test, Pre-Prod and Prod environments.
  6. Contributing to creating a coherent strategy for productionising environments.
  7. Database housekeeping - working with the team in maintaining and enhancing the performance of existing databases and ensuring databases are highly available.
  8. Monitoring databases and related systems to ensure optimized performance.
  9. Providing guidance and assistance to Data Engineers and Data Analysts with their SQL and performance issues.
  10. Database access management.
  11. Database patching and DR testing.
  12. Adhering to best practices in securely storing, backing up, and archiving data.
  13. Documenting - requirements capture, database design, and configuration.
  14. Working with third parties and vendors to raise support tickets and Changes.
  15. Support the migration to public cloud-based infrastructure and services (Azure).
  16. Keeping abreast of developments and best practices in database engineering.

You will need:

  1. Experience in database administration in SQL Server (SQL 2012, SQL 2017, SQL 2019).
  2. Experience of writing T-SQL, including stored procedures, tables, triggers etc.
  3. Knowledge of SQL Server tools e.g. SQL profiler.
  4. SSIS (from an administration perspective).
  5. PowerShell.
  6. Experience of configuring MS SQL for high availability and Disaster Recovery using SQL Clustering and Always-On Availability Groups.
  7. Practical experience in monitoring and tuning databases.
  8. Understanding of database encryption.
  9. Understanding of GDPR and management of data.
  10. Ability to resolve data related problems.
  11. Ability to communicate with both technical and non-technical people, effectively and constructively.
