Rotational Band 5 Speech and Language Therapist - Whipps Cross Hospital

Barts Health NHS Trust has an exciting opportunity for a permanent Band 5 Speech and Language Therapist to join our friendly and supportive team.

This band 5 rotation covers the following specialities:

  • Inpatient acute wards (0.6 WTE) and inpatient stroke unit (0.4 WTE)

Inpatient acute wards, including the intensive care unit (ICU) if required.

This post holder will develop knowledge and skills in the assessment, management and rehabilitation of patients with acquired communication and/or swallowing difficulties, as a result of stroke and/or acquired medical conditions, across the acute inpatient wards and ICU.

This post will provide a newly qualified SLT with regular 1:1 supervision, joint clinical sessions, in-house training and peer supervision. There are also excellent CPD opportunities within the SLT service, and as part of the wider multi-disciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as a member of the Speech & Language Therapy Department (SLT) at Whipps Cross Hospital. The successful candidate will commence in a split role across acute and inpatient stroke unit and then rotate into a full time acute role providing a service to adults with acquired communication, swallowing and cognitive impairment following a stroke and/or those associated with a variety of acute and chronic disorders (neurological, respiratory, and other medical conditions).

The post holder will receive regular supervision by a senior Speech & Language Therapist and will be supported to develop their skills in assessment, treatment and management of swallowing and communication disorders. The post holder will work as part of the wider therapy team and support with service developments along designated clinical pathways. The post holder may have opportunities to support band 3 staff and student speech and language therapists on their placements, if appropriate.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification or equivalent
  • Health & Care Professions Council - License to Practice

Desirable

  • Registered Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapist

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working with adults with acquired communication & swallowing disorders within the acute inpatients setting
  • Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team

Desirable

  • Experience working with clients from multicultural/lingual backgrounds and working with interpreters

  • Knowledge of cultural and linguistic issues in working with a multi-cultural caseload
  • Awareness of the principles of clinical governance/audit
  • Awareness of the roles of other professionals
  • Awareness of standards of record keeping

  • Experience of Quality Improvement and service development projects
