Speech and Language Therapist Development Opportunity Band 5 to 6

The post will provide a clinical and advisory Speech & Language Therapy (SLT) service to children with speech, language and communication needs in the early years and school age years including children with social communication differences and/or ASD and associated language disorder.

We have secured funding to support the possibility of the successful candidate transitioning to a Band 6 specialist role within 18 months of joining the team, following an individualised development plan based on performance and clinical competencies. Both the band 5 and band 6 job descriptions are attached to the advert for this post.

Job summary

The Bexley Childrens Speech and Language Therapy service offers a range of services with specialist teams across EYs, ASD, Deafness, Stammering, Specialist Resourced Provisions and SEMH. We work closely across teams to provide clinical support and second opinions. We also have opportunities to develop training skills to enhance skills and knowledge for staff working with children with SLCN.

Main duties of the job

  1. To provide an assessment and therapy service for children with speech and language needs, and children with complex communication needs referred to the SLT service.

  2. To develop the ability to reflect on auditory, visual, and kinaesthetic aspects of clients' communication and to identify appropriate strategies to facilitate and enhance communicative effectiveness.

  3. To manage a complex communication caseload independently, accessing clinical/managerial supervision on a regular basis and to make a differential diagnosis on the basis of evidence from assessment, seeking advice when appropriate.

  4. To deliver care in line with the RCSLT/HCPC professional guidelines and standards.

  5. To be responsible for the planning, and evaluation of evidence-based therapy interventions. To monitor and review the progress of therapy programmes implemented and facilitate modifications of interventions / targets as appropriate.

  6. To ensure maximum involvement of the client, family/carer, education staff and other professional staff where appropriate in planning care and the therapy programme.

  7. To reflect on clinical practice identifying strengths and needs and providing evidence of sound clinical practice.

  8. To maintain professional competence through personal development and training. To be responsible for maintaining own professional registration and meet HCPC Registration requirements maintaining a professional portfolio.

Qualifications

  • Speech & Language Therapy Degree
  • Completion of Newly Qualified Therapist Competencies

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of completing assessment alongside children and young people with language disorder
  • Experience of working alongside children/young people with autism

Training

Essential

  • Evidence of successful completion of a range of short courses at post graduate level including courses related to AAC
