Specialty Doctor Microbiology - Buckinghamshire

We are recruiting for a 12-month NHS Fixed Term Specialty Doctor Microbiology post for an NHS Trust in Buckinghamshire.

This is a new post for Specialty Doctor in Microbiology. It is envisaged that this post would be suitable for a doctor with at least 3-5 years of postgraduate experience who is interested in exploring infection specialities as a career option or for a doctor with specialist microbiology/infection experience overseas looking to work in the NHS and gain UK experience. However, our client can be flexible on these expectations.

The post holder will be expected to contribute with consultant colleagues and peers to the provision of Clinical Microbiology/Infectious disease services.

Main duties of the job:

  1. Duty Microbiologist role for clinical advice
  2. Supervision of the laboratory Microbiology service
  3. Supervision of and participation in further processing of specimens and interpretation of results
  4. Authorisation and interpretation of results
  5. Ward rounds and referral service as necessary
  6. Participation in teaching, research, audits as necessary
  7. Attendance by agreement at the Microbiology Clinical/management Meeting and Clinical Improvement Group (CIG) meetings
  8. Taking routine clinical calls and communication of critical results
  9. Attendance at Microbiology antibiotic ward rounds
  10. Attendance to Haematology and other MDTs
  11. Daily ITU ward rounds with consultant on call
  12. Attendance at the Infection prevention and control (IPC) meetings
  13. Participation in Clinical Grand Round on Wednesday afternoon (expected)
  14. Participation in day-to-day Infection Control activities
  15. Participation in Infection control meetings, AMS Committee meetings and others as necessary
  16. Participate in Public Health Duties: liaison with the Regional UKHSA laboratory and UKHSA who will provide support in reporting outbreaks, clusters of cases, and any other SI to the appropriate authorities

Clinical activities run in a four-weekly rota and the total is 9PA. 1 SPA is allocated for CPD and revalidation purposes. This can be worked flexibly with mutual agreement.

Direct clinical activities include medical and surgical specialties, ITU primary care, and Virology and Serology work.
