We are looking for Emergency Medicine Specialty Doctors to join our expanding team of SAS doctors in North Cumbria. You will be supported to attain your individual career goals whilst providing high quality emergency care to our semi-rural population. After a period of induction at your base site, you will work sessions at both the Cumberland Infirmary Carlisle (CIC) in the north of the county and West Cumberland Hospital (WCH), Whitehaven on the stunning west coast.

Applications are welcome from candidates wishing to work either full or part-time as a Specialty Doctor in Emergency Medicine. Any applicant who is unable, for personal reasons, to work full-time, will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Main duties of the job

Our Specialty Doctors work as part of a 24hr "Senior Decision Maker" (SDM) rota alongside Emergency Medicine Higher Specialist Trainees and RCEM Credentialed Senior Advanced Clinical Practitioners. You will work under the supervision of duty Consultants who are present on both sites between 0800-0000 and on-call thereafter.

Suitably experienced and interested SAS doctors are also able to take up roles as clinical and educational supervisors, appraisers, research investigators and to apply for leadership positions within the Trust. About us

NCIC uniquely provides the Medical Directorate Development faculty (MDDF). The MDDF is led by the Deputy Medical Director for Professional Standards along with our International Medical Graduates (IMG) Tutor, Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) lead, Locally Employed Doctors (LED) lead and Speciality and Associate Specialist (SAS) lead. We offer a suite of professionalised development and support including;

  • An extended and enhanced induction and CPD program for IMGs
  • LED support, careers guidance and CPD
  • A quality controlled CESR portfolio support system and teaching program
  • SAS professional representation and teaching program
  • An accredited program for existing and aspiring Medical Leaders

Standard Check: £18 + Administration cost of £3.85 = £21.85. Deducted at £6.85 from 1st month salary and £5 deducted from salary over following 3 months.

Enhanced Check: £38 + administration cost of £3.90 = £41.90. Deducted at £11.90 from 1st month salary and £10 deducted from salary over following 3 months.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

  • Full GMC Registration with Licence to Practice MBBS or equivalent medical degree Current certification in: ALS/ACLS, ATLS/ETC, and APLS/EPLS
  • Postgraduate Royal College qualification Evidence of attendance at or qualification in expedition wilderness medicine or humanitarian course or qualification in above.

Experience and Knowledge

  • Shall have completed at least four years' full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty; or shall have equivalent experience and competencies Minimum of 12 months working in Emergency Medicine Minimum of 12 months working for an NHS organisation Minimum of 3 months in Anaesthesia and/or Intensive Care Medicine Experience of working in Paediatrics - general or emergency medicine. Can demonstrate successful completion of foundation competencies or equivalent Good communication, interpersonal and organisational skills. Ability to know own limitations & when to seek advice Excellent time management - Ability to prioritise workload & use initiative Professional integrity & respect for others
  • Evidence of involvement in audit & research projects Teaching skills Presentation skills

Management & Administrative

  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload and delegate responsibilities. Ability to maintain accurate, and legible records. Awareness of changes in NHS organisation (purchaser, provider and community care) Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of the service. Ability to organise and manage own workload efficiently. Good standard of note keeping, computer skills and Willingness to learn
