Specialty Doctor in Anaesthetics

This is a career enhancing opportunity for an ambitious Speciality Doctor in Anaesthesia to join Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust based within our Anaesthesia team at TraffordHospital, with an option to undertake additional work at other sites depending on your preference and developmental opportunities.

The Department will endeavour to support applicants looking to apply for consultant posts via the CESR route, and as a large Trust with multiple sub-speciality areas, much of the 2010 Anaesthetic Curriculum can be covered.

The Department will also endeavour to aid successful applicants in the development of specialist interests within the fields of anaesthesia, critical care, pain and perioperative medicine.

Specific job plans will be organised following discussion with the Clinical Directors and Job Planning leads. This may incorporate out-of-hours commitments, or weekend working.

Direct Clinical Care may be fixed in time and place, some fixed in time and some annualised. As part of the Managed Clinical Service of CSS, the post holder may be required to work across the Trust site.

Main duties of the job

Trafford Hospital

Trafford Hospital today hosts nine elective operating theatres, along with a four-bedded high-care facility and the Manchester Elective Orthopaedic Centre (MEOC). Elective orthopaedic surgery is mainly carried out at the Manchester Orthopaedic Centre situated within Trafford General Hospital which boasts a dedicated ring-fenced elective orthopaedic facility. This facility offers joint school, day case and inpatient facilities and has four laminar flow operating theatres.

Person Specification

• Pass at Primary FRCA from the Royal College of Anaesthetists or equivalent.
• Pass at Final FRCA

Training

• Completion of Core Training, as evidenced by a Core Level Training Certificate or equivalent
• Experience as a Specialist Trainee on a recognised UK training scheme
• Experience as a Speciality Doctor.

Professional Interest and Experience

• Experience in trauma and orthopaedic anaesthesia.
• Experience in obstetric anaesthesia.
• Evidence of involvement in Quality Improvement.
• Recent relevant CPD for the job description.
• Current Advanced Life Support Certification
• Can demonstrate a commitment to putting patient safety at the heart of all activity
• Evidence of involvement in research
• Knowledge of up to date literature

Management/Adminstration

• Ability to manage & lead a team in the delivery of a quality service.
• Some experience of departmental management
• Evidence of involvement in administrative roles.

Teaching and Research

• Experience in undergraduate teaching.
• Experience in teaching undergraduates and postgraduates clinical & procedural skills
• Evidence that applicant is able to mentor and teach doctors in training
• Interest in teaching paramedical staff
• Experience in simulation training
• Able to facilitate travel to and from hospital site including out-of-hours
