Specialist Speech and Language Therapist

Are you an energetic, self-motivated, adaptable and innovative Speech and Language Therapist? Do you share our passion and commitment to achieving positive outcomes for children and young people with speech, language and communication needs? If so, we would welcome your application for this Band 6 role within our MK SLT Service to Schools.

The SLT Service to Schools in MK is long established, yet we remain forward thinking and committed to ongoing development. We embrace change and are driven by the evidence base, neuro-affirming approaches and functional, communication friendly practices.

This part-time, permanent position is based in Milton Keynes, and offers the chance to be part of a small, supportive team whilst working in a range of environments.

You will join a team of very experienced therapists with a strong team working ethos where we celebrate our individual talents and skills. You will receive comprehensive induction, mentoring and appraisal to maximise your contribution and support your continuing professional development.

Milton Keynes is a growing and vibrant city with easy access to the M1 and superb facilities for everyday living and leisure activities.

You must hold a UK driving license, have use of your own car and be able to travel across and at times beyond the immediate locality as part of your job role.

Main duties of the job
  1. Develop policies and practices around SLCN within and across settings and professional groups e.g. Communication Friendly classrooms.
  2. Collaborate with other agencies to ensure that SLCN are identified and addressed within educational practices.
  3. Contribute to the development and communication of the evidence base around SLCN and life outcomes.
  4. Develop staff knowledge around SLCN through training and collaborative working.
  5. Supplement teacher assessment, communication friendly classroom practices and targeted support with specialist assessment and personalised evidence-based interventions where these are indicated to better understand need or address specific underlying difficulties which are the unique remit of specialist speech and language therapists.
  6. Identify clear outcomes and action plans for settings, children/young people and families to maximise learning, inclusion, participation and wellbeing.

Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
  • Registration with Health Professions Council as a speech and language therapist.
  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy degree qualification or equivalent.
  • Registered member of RCSLT.
  • Membership to appropriate CEN.
Experience
  • Postgraduate experience of assessing, diagnosing and implementing appropriate management plans for children with a wide range of speech, language and communication difficulties, and eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development and advanced training, e.g. whole class work, Makaton and EDS.
  • Specialist knowledge of assessment tools relevant to the client group.
  • Specialist knowledge of a range of appropriate educational and therapeutic interventions effective for working in educational settings.
  • Knowledge of prioritisation issues within the client group.
  • Knowledge of national policies and procedures relevant to the client group.
  • Knowledge of principles of clinical governance.
