Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and enthusiastic registered nurse to work within the Bowel Cancer Screening Department. This is a substantive 37.5-hour Band 6 role and an ideal opportunity for those who would like to develop a career as a Specialist Screening Practitioner (SSP).


The Bowel Cancer Screening Department covers both Trust sites, these being University Hospital Coventry, and the Hospital of St Cross in Rugby, along with our satellite centres within North Warwickshire, and South Warwickshire Foundation Trust. Please note that this role will require independent travel between these regional centres.


Applicants will be expected to be up to date in their practice; able to develop their skills and contribute to the development of the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.

The role of the SSP is to facilitate the patient journey for those referred to the Centre with a positive FIT test. This involves giving patients the required information to enable them to make appropriate choices for investigation and carrying out health assessments either in a clinical setting. SSPs are also responsible for preparing and attending Bowel Cancer Screening endoscopy lists and for the follow-up of the patient episode post-procedure.


An essential requirement is to attend the Bowel Cancer Screening Specialist Practitioner course and to undertake further training to enable the successful candidate to fulfil the SSP requirements.


Key Responsibilities:
  1. Nurse Led clinics
  2. Assessment of the patient
  3. Scheduling of procedure
  4. Data collection
  5. Discussion of findings
  6. Arranging follow up and referral to other specialties
  7. Supporting the Patient throughout the screening journey

It is important that applicants have good IT and organisational skills along with the ability to communicate with both patients and the wider multi-disciplinary team.

Manage a caseload of FIT test positive patients within BCSP and Trust guidelines and policies (Core Dimension HWB2 Level 3). To maintain own expert level of competence.


Support the BCSP Lead Nurse in improving service performance and developing new models of working that may influence participation in the BCSP (Core Dimension 4 Level 3 and G2 Level 2).


Deputise for the BCSP Lead Nurse when appropriate.
