Specialist Pharmacy Technician - Deputy Dispensary Manager

As part of a review of our structure and workload, we have created an exciting new post of Deputy Dispensary Manager at Chapel Allerton Pharmacy, who will support the Dispensary Manager to lead and supervise the dispensary service.

We are looking for a dynamic individual who can demonstrate leadership values to support and engage with the team and ensure the consistent delivery of high quality supply of medicines to patients within the Leeds Teaching Hospitals.

The successful candidate will be expected to work within the multi-disciplinary team, maintain high standards of practice while supporting staff on a daily basis.

Their responsibilities will include leading the team ensuring their development needs are met through appraisals and ongoing support and development. They will be expected to support the Pharmacy Technician Team Leader in practice and service projects as well as the day-to-day running of the dispensary. Main duties of the job

Key duties will involve:

  1. Manage and develop the daily delivery of the Pharmacy Service at Chapel Allerton Pharmacy including labelling and dispensing, accuracy checking of medicines, controlled drugs and clinical trials.
  2. Support the stock controller with stock control, stock issues and ordering.
  3. Line manage and supervise some technical and support staff within the dispensary.
  4. Support and deputise for the Pharmacy Technician Team Leader in decision making and manage service requirements.
  5. Ward based work including taking medication drug histories, overseeing ward top-ups including Omnicells at ward level.
  6. Counsel patients on their medication and ensure outpatient waiting times are within target times.
  7. Communicate with wards and clinics/doctors/prescribers regarding prescription queries and issues.

Job responsibilities
  1. To manage and develop the daily delivery of a specialist technical service within a designated section. This will incorporate the pharmacy strategy for medicines management.
  2. The post holder will also perform a range of medicine supply functions; these will be predominantly concerned with accuracy checking and management of stock control.
  3. The post holder will be required to work evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays on a rotational basis.
  4. Performs the role of Lead Technician during evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays and is a named member on the Pharmacy MAJAX call out procedure.
  5. Line management and supervision of staff within assigned area. Direct and support staff assigned to the specific area on rotation including other technical grades, pre-registration and qualified pharmacists.
  6. Responsible for training and development, attendance management including co-ordination of annual leave and lieu time for staff assigned to that area.
  7. Maintain links with other Specialist Pharmacy Technicians, managers and other pharmacy staff to ensure a safe and efficient service.
  8. Ensure departmental work is completed within agreed deadlines. Ensure equipment and materials are used responsibly relating to Trust risk assessments.
  9. Ensure all staff comply with Trust and Pharmacy Policies and Procedures.
  10. Responsible for all stock control ensuring optimum stock levels and minimal wastage, including ordering and receipt of medicines and consumables into designated area.
  11. Report departmental statistics, including dispensing errors and incidents, to relevant services manager on a monthly basis.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required
  1. BTEC in Pharmaceutical science, NVQ level 3 in Pharmacy Services or equivalent.
  2. Member of or eligible to become technician registrant of General.
  3. Supervisory / Management experience of staff.
  4. Expert knowledge of good dispensing/distribution/manufacturing practice.
  5. High level of knowledge of medicine stock control systems.
  6. Hospital pharmacy experience.
  7. Excellent literacy, numeric and written communication skills.
  8. Accuracy checking experience.
  9. Experience of managing change.
  10. Experience of training/assessing staff.
  11. Experience of developing and implementing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
