Shaftesbury Icanho is a non-residential highly specialist community-based brain injury rehabilitation service. Demand for our service is growing and we are looking to expand our team.

Icanho's client base is 100% ABI including stroke. Our clinical work is undertaken as an interdisciplinary team and OT is an integral and valued part of that team. We work with people in our purpose-built centre, in clients' homes and the community, based on need.

This role is an excellent opportunity for someone with a strong interest in neuro-rehabilitation who wishes to progress in this field. You will be joining our small team of experienced and enthusiastic occupational therapists to deliver client-centred rehabilitation, 1:1 and group interventions including support to help people back to work. You will work with experienced specialist occupational therapists to build your skills/knowledge.

Main duties of the job
  1. Work as an integral part of the interdisciplinary team to deliver high quality goal-centred rehabilitation.
  2. Responsible for a caseload of clients to provide OT assessment and intervention including return to work/study, treatment and discharge of clients, acting as key worker when necessary.
  3. Formulate and implement evidence-based treatment plans with the client and their family including client-centred goal setting.
  4. Write reports and maintain the highest standards of clinical record keeping utilising SystmOne.
  5. Appropriate use, analysis and interpretation of data, including valid outcome measures.
  6. Contribute to development, evaluation and integration of evidence-based practice.
  7. Involve family and carers in the rehabilitation process providing education and training as required.
  8. Undertake risk assessment and risk management.
  9. Attend interdisciplinary and multi-agency meetings and provide specialist consultation and advice to other colleagues.
  10. Supervise rehabilitation assistants and OT students, with support from colleagues.
  11. Develop and take part in the provision of educational sessions, including presentations.
  12. Evidence own CPD by undertaking relevant training.
  13. Maintain knowledge of relevant development and research in the field of ABI.
  14. Participate in relevant audit/research activities.
  15. Maintain effective working relationships with all internal and external stakeholders, inc. NHS, Social care, Medico Legal, housing, education, employers, voluntary sector and other community organisations.

Purpose of the job:

  1. To provide specialist Occupational Therapy (OT) assessment and intervention for rehabilitation of clients, including support to return to work/study (vocational rehabilitation) following acquired brain injury (ABI).
  2. To work with carers/families as appropriate.
  3. To play an integral part in the evaluation, development and integration of evidence-based practice [including relevant technology] within the OT department and wider Service.
  4. To contribute to the overall direction and development of the OT department and interdisciplinary team/service.
  5. To exercise full professional responsibility for specialist ABI OT assessment, treatment and discharge of clients based upon the appropriate use, analysis and interpretation of data from a variety of sources, including valid outcome measures.
  6. Formulate and implement plans with the client, their family and/or carer for evidence-based treatment, including client-centred goal setting and discharge planning.
  7. Ensure a high quality of treatment is delivered, using ABI experience and knowledge, clinical reasoning and reflective practice.
  8. Set goals and write reports in line with service policy/practice in a timely manner appropriate to the recipient and maintain the highest standards of clinical record keeping.
  9. Ensure that family and carers are involved with the rehabilitation process, providing education and training as required to maximise the clients level of function and independence.
  10. Ensure that a high standard of flexible communication with clients, families, carers and outside agencies is maintained.
  11. Undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual clients and to provide advice to other professionals.
  12. Undertake visits to clients homes/local communities when clinically necessary.
  13. Manage occupational therapy resources and ensure appropriate and safe use of equipment and appropriate stock control.
  14. Participate in the evaluation and selection of new technology, equipment and resources for the service.
  15. Act as key worker as required in relation to individual clients.
  16. Participate actively in the interdisciplinary and multi-agency meetings concerning the delivery and development of the clinical service for clients, and to provide specialist consultation, supervision and advice to other colleagues.
  17. Take responsibility for the supervision of rehabilitation assistants, and OT students, with support from colleagues.
  18. Develop and take part in the provision of educational sessions, including presentations, for carers, families, employers and other agencies as required.
  19. Evidence own personal and continuous professional development by undertaking relevant training, attending meetings and conferences relevant to your Personal Development Plan agreed with the Head of Department and in line with the strategic development for the service.
  20. Maintain up to date knowledge of relevant development and research in the field of acquired brain injury rehabilitation locally, nationally and internationally.
  21. Employ critical appraisal skills to evaluate research and participate in audit/research activities within the service.
  22. Receive regular clinical professional supervision in accordance with Shaftesbury Policy and Procedures and Professional Guidelines. To adhere to all clinical governance policy and procedures.
  23. Adhere to professional OT standards and professional conduct and ensure an environment that is respectful to a clients dignity, culture and personal needs.
  24. Comply with all Livability Health and Safety policies in order to ensure that a safe working environment is maintained for clients, carers, staff and visitors.
  25. Be aware of current legislation e.g. Safeguarding, Mental Capacity Act, Data Protection and the Disability Discrimination Act and their relevance to practice.
  26. Carry out additional duties and tasks that may be required within the range of the responsibilities of the post.
