Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a qualified clinician with a professional registration (e.g. Nurse, Pharmacist) with a Non-Medical Prescribing qualification to join our community children's service in South West Essex (including Brentwood, Basildon & Thurrock). If you enjoy working in an integrated multi-disciplinary team and have the desire and skills to deliver a high standard of care for young people and families then this is the post for you.

Main duties of the job

As part of your role you will be working collaboratively with your colleagues to provide high-quality, safe and holistic care to children on the neurodevelopment pathway, especially those diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) for follow up and monitoring.

You will offer advice, support and clinical input to young people and their families, undertaking the role of an Independent non-medical prescriber (as per legal limitations, defined by Registration) to young people who have been recently diagnosed with ADHD and have been prescribed medication.

To offer locality based care, the team has three main bases (one in Brentwood, one in Basildon and one in Thurrock) and offers a range of community based health services to children/ young people and their parents with neurodevelopmental differences. This includes Community Paediatrics, Specialist Nursing, Clinical Psychology, Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy.

About us

NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust. All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment. As part of the process new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers and attend a number of drop in sessions focusing in engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes. The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.

Probationary Period

This post will be subject to a probationary period. Internal applicants are exempt from the probationary period (unless you are an internal applicant currently part way through a probationary period or currently a bank member of staff).

High Cost Area Supplement

This post also attracts payment for High Cost Area Supplement of 5% of the basic salary (minimum payment of £1,258 and a maximum payment of £2,122 per annum pro rata).

Job responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

  1. To work closely with Community Paediatricians in delivering a service to children diagnosed with ADHD, undertaking the role of an Independent non-medical prescriber.
  2. To contribute to the care, co-ordination and management of a defined caseload of clients with ADHD and co-morbid-disorders with a view to promoting the management of the disorder in a community setting.
  3. To participate in appropriate training developments as required.
  4. To develop digital material and resources that disseminate facts and management strategies for children with ADHD.
  5. To help parents to become more empowered and resilient through knowledge, management and understanding of ADHD.

Person Specification

Qualification Essential

  • Post graduate clinical certificate/diploma or equivalent (e.g. nursing, MPharm)
  • Non-medical prescribing course at post graduate level

Experience Essential

  • Experience of working with children and young people who have complex health care needs and disabilities in community settings
  • Experience of multi-agency/disciplinary working
  • Evidence of innovative and evidence-based practice

Desirable

  • Experience of managing or supervising staff
  • Track record of prescribing practice

Knowledge Essential

  • An awareness of NHS priorities
  • Possess in depth understanding of clinical, social and family situations
  • In depth knowledge and understanding of safeguarding children procedures
  • Detailed working knowledge of medication management and the compliance issues
  • In-depth understanding of the risks associated with NMP and the management side effects and errors

Other Essential

  • Able to work efficiently in an unpredictable working environment
  • Experience of promoting people's equality, diversity and rights

Skills Essential

  • Effective communication/interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability to prioritise and manage a caseload
  • Demonstrates the ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to respond appropriately to children and young people in need and/or children at risk in accordance with local and national safeguarding guidance
  • Flexible approach to work - ability to move to different locations as appropriate
  • Basic awareness of IT and IT skills

Desirable

  • Effective management skills e.g. leadership and negotiation
  • The ability to provide effective clinical teaching/training to carers and staff who are not medically trained
