Specialist Clinical Pharmacist / Deputy Training and Education Manager

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced pharmacist to join the education and training team at University Hospitals Dorset (UHD). The established team comprises an Education and Training Manager, a Lead Pharmacy Technician responsible for Rotational Pharmacy Technician training, and two Deputy Lead Pharmacy Technicians responsible for the pre-registration trainee pharmacy technician training.

This role will involve cross-site working at both Poole and Bournemouth hospitals, and requires a dedicated pharmacist to support the Education and Training Manager improve, adapt and future-proof the UHD pharmacy workforce. You will provide a clinical pharmacy ward service across UHD, maintaining your own clinical skills whilst mentoring junior pharmacists on the wards.

We are developing working relationships with Bournemouth University, with one of our pharmacists recently having experience of the role as Lecturer Practitioner for undergraduates (nursing).

Sharing pharmacy knowledge across the multidisciplinary teams is something we are passionate about at UHD and we can support your involvement in providing this. You will also be encouraged to undertake training to develop your own education and training skills.

This role requires General Pharmaceutical Council Registration

Base Location: This position will require cross site working between Poole and Royal Bournemouth Hospital.

Job responsibilities

  1. Support the Education, Training and Research Manager to develop and maintain the provision of undergraduate and postgraduate education and training of pharmacists and education and training for the Trainee Pharmacists (TP).
  2. Participate in both ward and departmental-based pharmaceutical and educational duties.
  3. Identify and facilitate delivery of both external and in-house training programmes to enable pharmacists, TPs, PTPTs, FPTs and ATOs to meet their professional requirements and developmental needs.
  4. Line manage trainee pharmacists, acting as a mentor and tutor to TPs and pharmacy diploma students and Band 6 pharmacists.
  5. Act as a role model to colleagues and junior staff on clinical and professional standards for pharmacy, medicines use and prescribing practice.
  6. Identify the training needs of the pharmacy service and develop training to meet these needs.
  7. Act as Lead Mentor across UHD for the Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy Practice, co-ordinating other diploma mentors and liaising with the education provider, supported by the Education, Training and Research Manager.
  8. Lead on the management of the Trainee Pharmacist programme across UHD supported by the Education, Training and Research Manager.
  9. Ensure training and development plans are implemented and updated for all grades of staff in clinical areas annually.
  10. Provide on-the-job support and training on all aspects of clinical pharmacy to pharmacists, trainee pharmacists and clinical technicians.
  11. Support the Specialist Pharmacists in providing teaching to medical students, trainee doctors and other healthcare professionals.
  12. Participate in clinical pharmacy meetings and contribute to the clinical pharmacy service liaising with the pharmacy team as appropriate.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Pharmacy or equivalent.
  • Registered with General Pharmaceutical Council.
  • Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy or equivalent experience.
  • Registered Pharmacy Independent Prescriber.
  • Membership of a professional organisation (e.g. Royal Pharmaceutical Society, UKCPA).
  • Postgraduate qualification in education and training.

Experience

  • Substantial NHS hospital experience post qualification of which considerable experience as a AfC or equivalent.
  • Substantial experience of delivering education and training.
  • Evidence of mentoring/training of pharmacy staff.
  • Experience in giving presentations.

Technical skills competencies

  • Time management skills, ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise work.
  • Experience of service development.

Personal attributes

  • Demonstrates an interest in the education, training and development of others.
  • Committed to continuing professional development.
  • Self-motivated, conscientious.
  • Experience of leading a team.

Knowledge

  • Good clinical knowledge of current therapeutics and pharmacy practice.
  • Working knowledge of and ability to apply all aspects of regulatory legislation and guidelines applicable to pharmacy services.
