Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join the Histopathology team at Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust.

The core working hours are 09:00 - 17:30, Monday to Friday.

The position is for a Band 5/6 Biomedical Scientist depending on experience and relevant qualifications.

We are looking for an individual who is motivated and enthusiastic to join a dedicated team providing a high-quality service.

The department provides a full diagnostic paediatric service.

The Histopathology department has UKAS ISO 15189 accreditation, is licensed by the Human Tissue Authority and is accredited for training with the Institute of Biomedical Science.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking an experienced, well motivated and suitably qualified Specialist Biomedical Scientist to work within the busy paediatric Histopathology department. Working as part of a team across Pathology, you will contribute to the provision and further development of a high-quality diagnostic service. You will support the Senior Biomedical Scientists responsible for the day-to-day organisation of the laboratory. You will prioritise work and re-direct staff accordingly. Your duties will include processing a variety of tissue types, validating/verifying, operating and maintaining equipment. You will regularly review internal quality control and external quality assurance data trends, taking action as appropriate. You will write and review standard operating procedures, and train all grades of staff. You will be directly involved in service development and modernisation. You should be highly motivated, a good communicator and enjoy working as part of a Pathology-wide team. The department has a proven track record of staff development in further education and actively encourages attendance at regional and national meetings.

Job responsibilities

  1. To carry out all work to specified standards laid down by the professional bodies including Institute of Biomedical Sciences (IBMS), Health Care Professions Council (HCPC), UK Accreditation Service (UKAS) and the Human Tissue Authority (HTA).
  2. To participate in the routine work of the department rotating through all sections of the department working without supervision.
  3. To plan and organise own work, unsupervised, on a daily basis ensuring results are produced in an accurate and timely manner.
  4. To actively redistribute workload/staff, dependent on demand in each area of the laboratory.
  5. To participate in maintaining a system for the safe and confidential storage and retrieval of proper records and specimens both physically and electronically.
  6. To ensure data integrity when entering patient demographics onto the Meditech computer system.
  7. To perform diagnostic tests that may require clinical intervention.
  8. To highlight urgent and clinically important results.
  9. To communicate effectively with colleagues and service users.
  10. To deal professionally with telephone enquiries using tact, diplomacy and empathy whilst maintaining strict confidentiality.
  11. To operate and maintain equipment on a daily basis including multitasking when operating machines simultaneously.
  12. To ensure proper and efficient use of equipment and consumables without wastage.
  13. To contribute to departmental management decisions.
  14. To handle hazardous chemicals and reagents appropriately, on a daily basis, according to COSHH regulations.
  15. To move and manipulate heavy objects whilst following appropriate manual handling guidelines.

Person Specification

Experience

Essential
  • Minimum 2 years post-registration experience of all routine work in a Clinical Histopathology laboratory.
  • Experience of Quality Management Systems.
  • Experience of supervising staff.
Desirable
  • Experience of paediatric Histopathology.
Knowledge

Essential
  • Knowledge of paediatric Histopathology.
  • Knowledge of health and safety issues relating to pathology.
  • Knowledge of all Histopathology Specialist techniques.
Education and training

Essential
  • Qualified to degree level, or equivalent, in a relevant Histopathology subject recognised by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS).
  • Registered with Health Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • IBMS Specialist portfolio in Histopathology or equivalent.
Desirable
  • Applicants working towards IBMS specialist diploma in Histopathology may be considered with no pay progression until complete.
