Job description

An incredible opportunity has arisen for a Sole Gardener or a Sole Gardener and Part-time Housekeeper Couple to join a beautiful property South of Godalming, Surrey in their respective fields. The Sole Gardener will be responsible for the overall management and maintenance of the gardens and grounds, and the housekeeper will join on a self-employed part-time basis – 16 hours per week ideally over 3 or 4 days.

The property spans an impressive 57 acres, encompassing parkland, expansive grasslands, and open fields, all cradling a meticulously designed 5-acre garden. Recently, the garden has undergone a thoughtful transformation to become lower maintenance. At the heart of the garden lies a charming walled garden, once a bustling kitchen garden, now reimagined with two herbaceous borders and grass. The 120-foot-long peach house is a unique feature, housing an array of fruit trees, including peach, fig, and pomegranate, along with a selection of vegetables. This glasshouse offers a canvas for the new gardener to leave their creative mark. Other areas include a small kitchen garden, hedges, mature and young trees, and expansive lawns. One particular lawn adjacent to the house is cut regularly during the summer; however, the other grass areas are left to grow to attract wildlife.

The ideal candidate for the gardening position will have a passion for horticulture, good plant knowledge, an eye for detail, and a strong interest in working to a high standard. They will be hands-on, organised, can work on their own initiative, and be flexible in their approach. Gardening duties will include, but are not limited to, maintaining the lawns, hedge cutting, pruning, transplanting, weeding, growing fruit and vegetables, and propagation. There is a wide range of garden machinery available for use, and therefore experience with the use and basic maintenance of the machinery is required. Spray certificates and chainsaw tickets would be advantageous but not a requirement as training can be provided for the successful candidate.

Additional duties will include clearing the gutter in the winter and leaf clearing in the autumn, security when the owners are travelling, and looking after their two small and friendly dogs – Jack Russell and Shih Tzu cross. There are two other properties on the estate that are rented out and also require occasional maintenance. Occasional driving to and from the airport may be requested.

Housekeeping duties will consist of the upkeep of the main house by way of cleaning, laundry, ironing, and weekly shopping.

The accommodation provided is a one-bedroom self-contained flat on the estate, rent-free. Council tax and utility bills are paid by the employer. Partners and pets are welcome. A car is also available for work and personal use.

A competitive salary is provided for the Sole Gardener role of £35,000 per annum and for the housekeeper is £15/hour. References will be requested from the successful applicants at the offer stage. A driving licence is required due to the rural location of the property.

SALARY: Combined Salary of up to £47,500
