Job description

We are looking for a Software Project Lead (SPL) who can build high-performing teams and create strong working relations with the multi-disciplined project environments that we work in!


Salary: Circa £70,000 depending on experience


Dynamic (hybrid) working: 4 to 5 days per week on-site, due to workload classification


Security Clearance: British Citizen or a Dual UK national with British citizenship.

Restrictions and/or limitations relating to nationality and/or rights to work may apply. As a minimum and after offer stage, all successful candidates will need to undergo HMG Basic Personnel Security Standard checks (BPSS), which are managed by the MBDA Personnel Security Team.

The opportunity:

Real Time Datalink and Telemetry Software is tasked with supplying Datalink and Telemetry software into a wide range of Missiles and platforms that require a method of communicating over the air between them.

As a Software Project Lead (Real Time Datalink and Telemetry) you will be planning and leading a team of Software engineers to deliver the Software for these products. You will be responsible for development and test of the DLU Software for the next generation of Missile Systems!

This is a leadership role and involves leading a team to deliver embedded software on time, on cost and on quality.

There is plenty of scope to help define what the Datalink and Telemetry units do, their protocols and technical design. As well as working within the SW team you will also be expected to work closely with Firmware, Systems, Hardware and Test Engineers and respective leads.


What we're looking for from you:

  • The ability to nurture and lead a team of typically 5-10 developers (software and verification & validation).
  • Proven track record to technically manage a team of software developers
  • Project management skills to ensure good planning, delivery and cost control of software
  • The ability to communicate effectively at all levels in the company across a range of mediums, including reporting of progress, blockers and achievements.
  • An understanding of traditional Software development methods like waterfall as well as Agile/SCRUM
  • Experience of Project management or Software project management covering aspects like
    • Reporting progress through metrics such as burn up charts, team velocity, cycle times and work-load-forecast.
    • Planning and budgeting Software projects
    • Managing and tracking a Software project
  • Experience of continuous build, integration and delivery pipeline automation using industry leading toolsets.
  • Technical/software background with experience working in a technology environment where quality and accuracy of work is essential.
  • Some experience working with mobile communications would be desirable but not essential
  • Understanding of UML and C, C++ and/or Ada Languages.
  • Ability to support and define requirements
  • History of improving teams through strong coaching and mentoring skills.
