Advertisement Details

A Skipper has overall command of the Vessel and is authorised to perform whatever acts are necessary for the safe, efficient and proper operation of the vessel.

The Skipper's primary considerations must be the safety of life; the safety of the vessel and the prevention of pollution and these considerations must override all other obligations including schedule, expense or convenience. In matters of safety, the Skipper has authority to take whatever actions he considers to be in the best interest of his vessel. The Skipper should not hesitate to request Management assistance or support should he consider it necessary.

The Skipper's duties and responsibilities will include:

  1. To command, handle and safely navigate any vessel owned and operated by the Ports and Harbours Operations of the Shetland Islands Council which include:
    1. The 20m fast pilot launches including boat handling during the embarkation and disembarkation of pilots to/from other vessels.
    2. Mooring boats during mooring operations within the Harbour and allowing for the safe transfer of wires/ropes from ship to shore.
    3. Any Ports and Harbours vessels in the deployment of anti-pollution equipment.
  2. Supervise the crew whilst carrying out their work.
  3. Check all life saving appliances and equipment.
  4. Ensure crew wear and use the personal protective and safety equipment issued to them.

  • The grade of this post is I
  • Salary shown in the advert is based on 37 hours per week and is inclusive of Distant Islands Allowance of £2,859 per annum (pro rata)
  • Permanent Full Time post for 45.6 Hours per Week, 52.18 weeks per year
  • A relocation package does not apply to this post
  • We will pay interview expenses from within Shetland
  • You must have the ability to travel throughout Shetland at short notice and where public transport is limited
  • We are happy to talk flexible working
