Job description

Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (part of NHS Humber Health Partnership) has a whole time vacancy at B7 for a Site Lead Chaplain within the Pastoral and Spiritual Care Team. Initially, you will be based in Hull (North Bank) but you should anticipate taking up lead responsibility for Pastoral and Spiritual Care on the South Bank. This is a Group appointment, and you will be expected to spend some time working on both North and South Bank, as required. The Team also regularly work in a number of community settings and you will be expected to play a full part in this activity.


As a Site Lead Chaplain, you will:

  • Have demonstrable specialist knowledge in a particular aspect of health care.
  • Be responsible for managing all on-site activity of the Pastoral and Spiritual Care Department, day-to-day.
  • Play a key role in developing/implementing Policy for Pastoral and Spiritual Care across the Group.
  • Provide assurance to the Group Head of Chaplaincy that the day-to-day activity is consistent with Legislation, UKBHC Standards, and local policy.
  • Demonstrate the ability to articulate appropriate application of UKBHC Standards, Codes of Practice and any NHS Chaplaincy Guidelines.

Main duties of the job
  • Day-to-day management of a team of Chaplains, Bank Chaplains and Volunteers.
  • Ensuring a 24 hour 365 day on call Rota is maintained for the site, participating fully in the rota.
  • Managing all aspects of the day-to-day engagement with patients, carers, families and staff, for the site, as a Chaplaincy practitioner.
  • Design and deliver appropriate training and education.
  • Responsible for operating Trust and departmental systems/processes to ensure the effective and efficient day-to-day delivery of all Chaplaincy activity on-site, and in associated community engagement.
  • Provide assurance to the Head of Chaplaincy for the day-to-day on-site activity of the Pastoral and Spiritual Care Team.
  • Deputising for the Head of Chaplaincy from time to time, as required.

Qualification and Training
Essential
  • Educated to degree level in theology or other area related to healthcare.

Desirable
  • Masters in Healthcare Chaplaincy (or evidence of working towards)
  • Teaching, training or counselling qualification
  • UKBHC Registered Chaplain

Experience
Essential
  • Recent experience in full-time healthcare Chaplaincy
  • Experience of supporting individuals through difficult or distressing circumstances
  • Experience of working with multi-faith or belief groups and ecumenical teams
  • Evidence of specialist Chaplaincy experience

Desirable
  • Experience in leading and motivating people
  • Evidence of ability to create and deliver training programmes

Knowledge
Essential
  • Specialist knowledge relating to provision of pastoral, spiritual and religious (or non-religious) care
  • Knowledge of the NHS, its structures and services

Desirable
  • Knowledge of the principles and dynamics of Values Based Reflective Practice
