Job description

We are excited to invite applications for a Band 6 Sister/Charge nurse to join our busy Adult Cardiac Critical Care Unit (ACCU) at St Bartholomew's Hospital Heart Centre. This is a unique opportunity to rotate across three critical care units, each caring for a diverse range of patients, including:

Post-operative cardiothoracic and thoracic patients.

We also support nurse-led research, fully backed by our Director of Research and Development.

This role will involve shift patterns of long days, nights and bank holidays to meet the service requirements of the ACCU.

Main duties of the job

  1. Assess, plan, provide, and evaluate skilled evidence-based care for critically ill patients (L2 & L3). Ensuring quality care and patient safety are paramount.
  2. Support and develop colleagues by mentoring and assessing their skills.
  3. Take charge of the unit, ensuring patient safety and in-depth clinical knowledge while supporting the bedside nurses.
  4. Promote practice development within Critical Care.
  5. Fulfil Local/Trust requirements in specified audit or project work.
  6. Maintain a safe working environment, complying with Health and Safety regulations, Environmental Health Act, and attending mandatory training.
  7. Provide highly skilled support to medical staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
  8. Work in conjunction with your seniors on quality improvement projects across the unit.
  9. Work with senior line manager to deputise and manage team members.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Registrant with NMC
  • Adult Critical Care Course
  • ILS / ALS provider
  • Specialist relevant clinical course
  • Management training
  • Completion of Step 4 Competencies
  • Leadership programme or equivalent
  • Degree or working towards first degree

Experience

  • Relevant critical care experience including management experience in ITU
  • Evidence of positive contribution to critical care
  • Associate Mentor to adult critical care course student

Knowledge

  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Up to date knowledge of clinical speciality and evidence based practice
  • Knowledge of current NHS, professional and educational issues
  • Understanding of current educational practices relating to training

Skills

  • Evidence of proficient clinical skills in critical care
  • Proficient in communication
  • Understanding of reflective practice and how it can be used
  • Evidence of critical thinking and initiative to solve problems and manage workload
  • Able to work in a changing environment and to actively support / promote planned change
  • Demonstrates effective team work skills
