About the Role

Base Location: Edinburgh or Perth - this is a hybrid role working a minimum of 2-3 days per week from the advertised office location.

Salary: £40,600 - £71,600 depending on skills and experience + performance-related bonus + disturbance/shift allowance + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

The Energy Management Centre (EMC) supports our business by managing real time energy balances and market exposures from SSE's assets and customers. As part of a shift team, you will be developed to manage our enviable generation portfolio and trade real time gas and electricity from the day ahead stage until delivery, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

This is a high-profile role, central to the success of SSE and will be at the forefront of the green energy transition supporting the growth of the whole business. The Shift Energy Trader is central to the real time optimisation and dispatch of the SSE energy portfolio, looking to minimise risks and maximise value. As part of the role you will:

  1. Execute trades in real-time electricity, gas, and balancing markets, maximizing value for SSE's portfolio through strategic decision-making and market insight.
  2. Monitor and analyse market conditions, supply-demand dynamics, and pricing trends to identify trading opportunities and risks.
  3. Manage and optimise SSE's energy portfolio by balancing supply and demand positions, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and company strategies.
  4. Assess and manage risks associated with market positions, ensuring alignment with SSE's risk management framework and trading limits.
  5. Work closely with internal teams including forecasting, operations, and risk management to align trading strategies and enhance overall business performance.

What do I need?

To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:

  1. Deep understanding of energy markets, including real-time trading, market mechanisms, and regulatory environments.
  2. Demonstrable knowledge of the GB and Ireland energy markets is desirable, but not essential as training will be provided.
  3. A strong attention to detail, comfortable working with numbers and common software packages.
  4. Experience with trading platforms, analytical tools, and data visualisation software, coupled with strong numerical and quantitative skills.
  5. Proven ability to make quick, confident decisions in high-pressure situations, with a focus on optimising outcomes and managing risk.

Energy Markets (EM) is the energy markets heart of the SSE Group, securing value for SSE's asset portfolios in wholesale energy markets as we move towards our vision of being a leading energy company in a net zero world. We play a critical role as the short-term energy market asset optimiser, and a long-term energy market adviser, for all SSE's Business Units (across SSE's Wind, Hydro, Low Carbon Thermal, Distributed Energy and Customer portfolios).
