Job description

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Early Intervention and Prevention Service at Wakefield Council, working within the district wide programmes and intervention team, working alongside the family and youth hubs, and partners as a districtwide Youth and Community Development Practitioner (Senior Youth Worker).

The Early Intervention and Prevention Service works with many partners in Wakefield, as part of Wakefield Families Together. Wakefield Families Together brings services together, to join up how we work, so that it’s easier for children, young people and families to find and access the support they need, at the earliest opportunity.

The Programmes and Interventions team is an exciting and fast developing team that seek to:

  1. Lead on the development and coordination of district-wide regional and national youth work, programmes and interventions.
  2. Plan and deliver district wide youth work in schools, youth centres, outdoor spaces and through detached work on the streets.
  3. Work with voluntary sector colleagues, other partners and young people to strengthen youth voice and participation, and the youth offer in Wakefield.
  4. Support the Council to ensure that it best meets its statutory responsibility to ensure a sufficient and comprehensive youth offer of positive activities and informal learning opportunities is available for all young people and that this offer is effectively monitored and publicised.
  5. Work with colleagues and wider partners to identify funding opportunities to secure additional resources to meet gaps in the youth offer and ensure increased opportunities for vulnerable young people to engage in youth activity.

The main duties of the Youth and Community Development Practitioner (Senior Youth Worker) are to:

  1. Support the Council to meet its statutory responsibility.
  2. Lead on the planning, delivery, recording and evaluation of high quality youth work, demonstrating and evidencing its impact.
  3. Work with the team and youth sector partners to strengthen youth work and work with young people across the district.
  4. Increase the number of young people participating in youth voice and influence activities.
  5. Grow the service’s online youth work presence and detached offer with partners.

We are looking for someone who is:

  1. Passionate about working with young people.
  2. Experienced in youth work, who knows how to deliver good quality youth work with a sprinkle of fun (that would make young people want to be involved).
  3. Willing to work flexibly, working regular evenings and occasional weekends to best meet the needs of young people.
