Job description

We are looking for an individual who is passionate about programming with a strong desire to put this into practice. A successful candidate would be highly numerate, enjoy working in a fast-paced environment, be inquisitive, and have a desire to make a difference.

The role sits initially with the Axiom operations team with an eventual transition to the Axiom development team. The Axiom teams are within the Finance division, Future Capabilities & Operations, responsible for ensuring all project delivery and support is provided to allow Nationwide to submit accurate, timely regulatory returns.

At Nationwide, we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK-wide estate while also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.

For this job, you'll spend at least two days per week, or if part-time you'll spend 40% of your working time, at either our office in Swindon or in London.

What you’ll be doing

You will be working initially in the Axiom operations team, focusing on testing solutions and analysing changes in the regulatory environment. This will provide foundational understanding to the Axiom application and enable the building of business relationships with internal stakeholders as well as the wider regulatory reporting environment. The aim is for this role to transition over time to the development team where you will focus on building and designing solutions using SQL and Java scripting.

Working closely with end users and other team colleagues, you will act as a point of contact, consult on change requests, and participate in projects. This requires a collaborative and coordinated approach to ensure high-quality solutions are delivered on time alongside colleagues from the Finance and Treasury business areas, and across Nationwide.

Using your problem-solving skills to identify issues and work these through to root-cause, whilst ensuring the required policy and process is adhered to.

About you

The ideal candidate will be looking to progress their career and programming skills in Finance and Regulatory Reporting. They will be interested in how this role fits into the wider Society. They will be pragmatic, valuing a range of viewpoints and providing positive and constructive feedback. They will be able to conduct detailed analysis and work collaboratively with analysts to drive regulatory change. They will also be able to step back from the detail and reflect on the bigger picture to deliver the right outcomes for our stakeholders and Nationwide as a whole.

This role is all about delivering for the Society whilst developing technical skills, so you’ll need to have:

  • Experience with either VBA, SQL, Python, Java Scripting, C++.
  • The ability to use your analytical skills to come up with solutions to data discrepancies.
  • An inquisitive mind with the ability to suggest improvements.
  • Being approachable with great communication skills, which will be used to build relationships and collaborate with internal teams.
  • Strong organisational skills to plan and deliver work with attention to detail.
  • A willingness to get involved in activities across the Finance department, such as working with our recognition team or Network and Knowledge events.

Our Customer First behaviours are all about putting customers and members at the heart of how we work together. You can strengthen your application by showing the behaviours that resonate with you, and how you might have already demonstrated these.

  • Say it straight - This is about being honest and direct with good intent and saying what needs to be said in the room. It’s also about being clear, precise, and using language that we and, importantly, our customers and members can understand.
  • Push for better - This is about aiming high and constantly looking for better in how we work together and serve our customers and members.
  • Get it done - This is about prioritising what will have the greatest impact, being decisive and taking accountability for delivering on the end-to-end outcome.

There are all sorts of employee benefits available at Nationwide, including:

  • A personal pension – if you put in 7% of your salary, we’ll top up by a further 16%
  • Up to 2 days of paid volunteering a year
