Job description

Senior Technical Writer

Black Duck Software, Inc. London, United Kingdom

Black Duck Software, Inc. helps organizations build secure, high-quality software, minimizing risks while maximizing speed and productivity. Black Duck, a recognized pioneer in application security, provides SAST, SCA, and DAST solutions that enable teams to quickly find and fix vulnerabilities and defects in proprietary code, open source components, and application behavior. With a combination of industry-leading tools, services, and expertise, only Black Duck helps organizations maximize security and quality in DevSecOps and throughout the software development life cycle.

We're looking for a technical writer to contribute to documentation for our Bridge CLI client and the associated plug-ins. The Bridge documentation team explains to customers how to put software testing into continuous integration pipelines. Explaining the process effectively means performing the steps themselves, so team members have to know how to set up pipelines in GitHub, GitLab, Azure, and Jenkins -- or be able to learn it quickly.

Primary qualifications
  • At least five years as a technical writer. We'll consider less technical writing experience for those with additional experience in a more technical role like software development or support.
  • Experience with at least one programming language
  • Comfortable in the command-line or (even better) familiar with Bash scripting
  • Familiarity with source control with Git (or a similar SCM tool) and GitLab (or a similar platform such as GitHub, BitBucket, etc.)
  • Knowledge of automation workflows/pipelines on GitHub, GitLab, Azure, or Jenkins. Prior experience in this area or the ability to learn multiple platforms quickly is key to this position.

What we value
  • Experience with Atlassian JIRA and Confluence
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies
  • Experience with SaaS-based integrated product documentation and help pages
  • Ability to take technical concepts and translate them into documentation to be consumed by non-technical users
  • Ability to work well in a fast-paced team environment
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to think about and improve the user experience, whether advocating for the user in the Agile process or writing documentation that is easy for customers to use.
  • Familiarity with application security software
  • Experience with open-source libraries
  • Experience with API documentation
  • Experience with other developer-facing documentation, like SDKs and command-line tools
  • Familiarity with Zoomin documentation portal
  • Experience working with DITA. (For example, create ditamaps; create task, concept, and reference topics from scratch; create keydefs, use a ditaval for conditional processing.)
