The Senior Technical Writer takes ownership of the Totara Help site, ensuring that all Totara products are documented accurately and to a high standard. Sitting as part of the wider Totara Community team, the Senior Technical Writer enables Totara Partners and customers to achieve their goals using their Totara products, contributing to customer success and retention.
Responsibilities:
Establishes standards for technical writing at Totara and maintains those standards across all written content
Writes accurate and high-quality end user Help content to deadlines set by Product release cycle
Provides QA of other written content, including but not limited to developer documentation, API documentation, release notes, change logs, Academy course materials, Marketing materials
Manages external suppliers involved in the delivery of Help documentation, currently Document360 (documentation platform) and Transperfect (translations provider)
Identifies appropriate tools to support and streamline documentation work
Provides inputs to annual budgets for Help documentation
Works to continuously improve the quality and user experience of Totara Help documentation
Has ownership of the Totara.Help site, including monitoring site usage, site administration tasks, user management, etc.
Works collaboratively across the organisation to obtain an in-depth understanding of our products and define documentation requirements
Works to agreed deadlines
Creates screenshots, screencasts, diagrams and other visual media (with support from a Visual Designer) to complement written documentation
Provides proactive feedback to Product team on product improvements and new features
Monitors Help usage and makes data-driven decisions about priority improvements using Document360 and GA4
Mentors Junior Technical Writers (not currently required but may be in future)
Represents Help documentation in wider internal projects (for example, the rollout of new products, in-product help)
Skills and Knowledge:
Excellent technical writing skills
Able to acquire subject knowledge through reading existing documentation and specifications, confirmation via product usage and communication with the R&D team
Able to quickly grasp complex technical concepts and describe them in easy to understand terms
Able to use and configure documentation tools (currently Document360)
Knowledge of learning technology sector and common use cases
Experience with CSS
Knowledge of Google Analytics
Able to plan and execute a project to agreed deadlines
Clear and proactive communication style
