Job Introduction

We have a busy multi-media Newsroom, and various production departments, incorporating technical areas operated by a team of multi-skilled technical and operational people working across broadcast output seven days per week. We cover all genres of broadcast, News, Sport, Current Affairs, Documentaries, on all platforms of Television, Radio and Online.

This is the front line of content management, dealing with ingest from live feeds, satellites and circuits, including IP paths, as well as material from camera cards and file transfers and archive systems.
The role includes overseeing the integration of content with the various production and operations teams, using a range of technology, to deliver material on time and of the highest suitable quality.

Initially this role will have an intensive short-term training and familiarisation plan to enable people to become familiar with the complex technical and processes involved.

Therefore we are looking for someone who are good learners and able to take on new skills quickly.

Main Responsibilities

  • Mainly working in the BBC NI Newsroom HUB position.
  • Working across multiple shifts covering 7 days per week, from 07:00 to 24:00, with occasional hours earlier and later depending on business needs.
  • Dealing with bookings and adhoc events, such as circuits and satellite feeds requiring content movement, baseband video, audio and IP material, by using a range of tools and processes including BNCS and Schedulink.
  • Undertaking ingest activities from camera cards and live capture, including file access from other systems and archives.
  • Occasionally undertaking playout of content, including for live transmission events.
  • To provide supervision and oversight of other members of the team, especially Technical Operators and occasional temp staff.
  • To work autonomously, and often working alone, to deal with complex and unplanned requirements.
  • To be competent in the use of desktop editing systems especially Cinegy and Dalet, to a basic level of loading, reviewing and editing sequences from multiple original files.
  • To create advanced or extensive technical documentation and guides on supported systems and equipment, and can liaise with production departments to ensure programme requirements are fully met, producing documentation where relevant.

Are you the right candidate?

  • We are looking for people with enthusiasm and motivation to get the job done to the highest standards.
  • You will have creativity to solve problems, be able to manage multiple activities simultaneously, prioritised for the business needs, and always behave with professionalism.
  • You understand the complex technology involved in the role, and are able to overcome problems should they arise.
  • You can supervise and train others, sharing technical and operational skills and knowledge to deliver a high-quality service focused on best practice.
  • You can prioritise activities, and delegate tasks as required, including planning for the delivery of future events or urgent tasks.

Please note that you will only be asked to submit a CV by way of application for this vacancy, and this CV will be the sole basis on which we initially review your application. We would therefore encourage you to approach your CV as an application, and to tailor it to highlight the skills and experience which we've talked about in this advert. We'd love to know not only about your most relevant experience and responsibilities in previous roles, but also any achievements, transferable skills, or areas of personal or professional interest that highlight why you'd be a great candidate for this role.
