About Our Client
London based Charity seeking a Senior Technical Accounting Manager to undertake a 6 months FTC. As a member of the Accounting Standards and Accounting Policies ("ASAP") project team, the holder of this specialist technical accounting role will independently review specific accounting areas for compliance with US GAAP and FRS102, recommend enhancements to existing policy, and work collaboratively with internal stakeholders to implement any changes to policies or processes as needed.
Job Description
- Review the current US GAAP and FRS 102 accounting practices and policies.
- Recommend refinements or enhancements to existing policies and processes, if applicable.
- Prepare technical accounting documentation to support the rationale for any agreed enhancements, for presentation to internal stakeholders and auditors.
- Draft revised policy documentation and prepare and deliver training for all staff to ensure agreed policies are understood and adhered to consistently across the organisation.
- Work directly with business teams to assess and address the practical implications and any challenges of implementing required changes to policies and procedures.
Rigorous assessment of assigned accounting areas for compliance with US GAAP and FRS102 requirements, including application of Industry-specific Not-for-Profit guidance set out in ASC 958
- Develop a full understanding of the context related to the relevant accounting topic, including current accounting practices and processes.
- Research relevant areas of accounting, identify available policy choices, and recommend accounting positions to be taken, considering pros and cons of the possible approaches within the context.
- Consider recent and upcoming GAAP developments to ensure that accounting positions and policy choices are "future proofed" to the extent possible.
Development of comprehensive policy and process documentation to support the organisations accounting positions, for presentation to internal stakeholders and external auditors
- Draft formal accounting policies under US GAAP and FRS102, to include consideration of all typical scenarios encountered at the organisation, covering both GAAP requirements and organisation policy elections, where relevant.
- Participate in discussions with organisation external auditors to agree and finalise accounting policy documents.
- Prepare accessible guidance documentation for day-to-day use by organisation accounting teams, including practical, worked examples illustrating complex or frequently encountered scenarios to support Finance and other colleagues in the application of agreed policies.
- Prepare any process documentation required, including identification of key/monitoring controls.
- Develop standard templates and questionnaires for use in month, quarter and year-end closes.
Preparation and delivery of training materials to ensure consistent understanding and application of key accounting policies across the global organisation
- Develop briefing/training materials for key accounting topics in a style and format appropriate to the audience, considering both operational financial reporting and strategic finance/business partnering aspects.
- Deliver live training sessions for finance teams and other colleagues whose inputs are required for financial reporting (for example: country managers, procurement, facilities, legal, HR) at country, region and head office level.
Ensure recommended refinements are practical and sustainable, taking account of resource and system constraints
- Work collaboratively with key process owners, users of financial information, and IT team to ensure any proposed refinements are workable and cost-effective.
- Identify opportunities for use of automation and leveraging SAP functionality to minimise the burden of GAAP compliance as far as possible.
Support internal stakeholders in implementing any changes to business processes, if required
- Work with finance teams to assess the level of resourcing required to implement, run and maintain the agreed future state processes and procedures.
- Provide ad-hoc guidance, as needed.
These key accountabilities will apply to various assigned topics within the scope of Project ASAP, which may include some or all of the following:
- Income and expenditure recognition and related balance sheet impacts.
- Foreign currency matters, including hyperinflation, functional currency determination and selection of exchange rates.
- Foreign currency hedging.
- Employee benefits.
- Inventory.
- Fixed assets.
- Restricted cash.
- Related parties.
The Successful Applicant
ACA or ACCA qualified.
Extensive US GAAP and FRS102 experience.
Detailed documenting of accounting policies, practices & procedures.
