Main duties of the job

Perform an essential role in maintaining a safe efficient service in the department/unit and support the Nurse Team Manager in the provision of a planned and holistic programme of care for the patients attending Outpatients Department (OPD).

Provide leadership in developing, implementing and evaluating standards of care in line with evidence-based practice.

Support Nurse Team Manager provide advice, support and leadership to all staff working in the area and work in close collaboration with other professionals providing advice and expertise to patients and the multi-disciplinary team.

Qualification/ Training

Essential

• GDC Registered
• Evidence of ongoing professional development and commitment to lifelong learning
• Evidence of leadership training/development

Desirable

• Relevant health care related degree

Previous Experience

Essential

• Significant experience caring for patients requiring Oral Maxillofacial Surgery

Desirable

• Involvement in audit/research and willingness to present findings at meetings and conferences
• Previous experience in running a department

Skills

Essential

• Ability to communicate effectively - excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Evidence of leadership and motivational skills, ability to lead and motivate a team.
• Demonstrates a flexible approach, able to react to the changing needs of the department.
• Ability to use negotiating skills in a positive manner to influence change within the department.
• Ability to liaise and work with the multidisciplinary team, making recommendations to enhance the smooth running and management of the department.

Desirable

• Representing Senior Sister/Charge Nurse in their absence
• Understanding of scheduling and capacity
• Ability to manage self and others in delivery of own work and related clinical outcomes to meet department expectations

Knowledge

Essential

• Has an understanding of managing the OMFS Department.
• Awareness of current developments in pre and post registration nursing.
• Understanding of risk management, health and safety and other clinical governance issues.
• Knowledge of local and national health care initiatives/innovation to improve patient care, experience and safety.

Desirable

• Competent person (risk assessor)
• Computer literate - relevant to OPD department.
• Understanding of expenditure and budget management.
