Job Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen in Haematology & Blood Transfusion within the NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership (ESEL). We are a new organisation, jointly owned by Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. Set up as an arms-length organisation, hosted by Barts Health NHS Trust, we have our own board and governance framework, with each of the three trusts having an equal voice and vote in the running of the Pathology Partnership. One of the largest pathology providers in the NHS, the Pathology Partnership brings together the strengths of teams from each of the three trusts into a single organisation, dedicated to the provision of high quality and cost-effective pathology services. We are looking to appoint an experienced Biomedical Scientist with a positive attitude, strong leadership skills and committed to meeting the needs of our patients by participating in a 24-hour Agenda for Change shift system. The successful candidate will be primarily based at The Royal London Hospital site (RLH) but may be expected to cover and support other ESEL sites depending on service demand.

Main Duties of the Job

A complex transformation programme has commenced to develop a single, integrated pathology network between 7 hospital laboratories. The aspired 'hub and spoke' operating model is centred at The Royal London Hospital (RLH); a busy major trauma centre which hosts the London Air Ambulance and connects to essential service laboratories supporting various clinical specialities at our partnered hospital sites. A vacancy has arisen for a Haematology and Blood Transfusion Senior Biomedical Scientist (Night) - to cover maternity leave. We are looking to appoint an experienced Biomedical Scientist with a positive attitude, a strong team player who is able to work in a flexible manner and is committed to supporting the clinical services of the Trust and meeting the needs of our patients by participating in an Agenda for Change shift system. The successful candidate will be required to participate in both day and night shifts as per service requirements and current departmental rota. You will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the laboratory, predominantly leading Haematology & Blood Transfusion section night shifts, and will take direction from supporting Operational Leads in transforming the delivery of services. The department utilises Winpath LIMS and uses Sysmex equipment in Haematology and Coagulation across all sites. Bio-Rad and Grifols analysers are used in Blood Transfusion.

We invite applications from enthusiastic candidates who have completed a relevant MSc or IBMS Special Examination (Fellowship) and who are interested in opportunities for progression and development within our organisation. This is an exciting opportunity to join a forward thinking and innovative organisation to deliver a high-quality service for one of the largest networked laboratories within the NHS. All ESEL laboratories are UKAS accredited and are equipped with Bio-rad IH-500 Blood Transfusion analysers which support the largest blood transfusion department in the UK. The haematology department uses the Sysmex XN (Haematology) and Sysmex CN (Coagulation) systems with an automated haematology track solution also integrated at the RLH Hub laboratory. The Specialist Haematology section at RLH is equipped with Bio-rad Variant II and Capillarys (Sebia) systems whilst the Specialist Haemostasis section offers an extensive testing repertoire to support the respective Comprehensive Care Centres within Barts Health for haemophilia, sickle cell anaemia, and thalassaemia and paediatric haematology, haemostasis and thrombosis. The successful candidate will be required to work mainly at all Barts Health Laboratory sites. Later on, as the East & South-East London (ESEL) Pathology partnership evolves, the primary location of work may be subject to change. Although this position is a 9 months fixed-term contract, the actual contract duration will be adjusted to account for the time taken to advertise the post, complete the hiring process, and finalise pre-employment checks.
