The City has ambitious plans to deliver an improved sustainable transport infrastructure, both in the City and within the wider region. These plans include:

  • Transforming our local communities through the development of ‘Liveable Neighbourhoods’;
  • Developing Mass Transit options for the city;
  • Building on our success as Cycling City to further develop and implement a world class walking and cycling network in the city;
  • Making school journeys safer and increasing walking and cycling by implementing School Streets;
  • Trialling and testing new transport technologies through our ‘Future Transport Zones’ programme of work.

The Road Safety Team is committed to achieving the City Council's ambitious Vision Zero target—eliminating deaths and serious injuries on our roads by 2040. Guided by the Safe Systems Approach, we work across multiple sectors to design and implement measures that improve road safety and support the Healthy Streets Approach, which puts people first and creates streets that promote active travel, clean air, and safer communities.

What will I be doing?

As a new team, it is an exciting time as our programme of activities will continue to develop over time based on our research into how we can deliver these aspirations.

As a Senior Road Safety Engineer you will provide lead road safety initiatives and projects within the City Transport service area, expert road safety advice and ensure that all projects meet budget, timeframes, and quality standards, and align with both the Safe Systems Approach to Road Safety and the Healthy Streets Approach, ensuring a holistic and people-centred design for all road users.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead Project Delivery: Design, manage, and deliver road safety projects and safety camera enforcement programmes, from inception to completion, ensuring that projects align with the principles of Healthy Streets and promote safety, accessibility, and sustainability.
  • Promote Healthy Streets: Implement and advocate for the Healthy Streets Approach, which focuses on improving the quality of life by making streets more pleasant, safe, and accessible for all, particularly pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Provide Road Safety Expertise: Offer specialist advice to stakeholders, including Councillors, senior management, professional teams, and the public, ensuring that road safety practices support the broader goals of creating healthy, active environments.
  • Team Leadership: Support and mentor members of the Road Safety Team, offering guidance and technical expertise to help them deliver successful project outcomes that align with both road safety and healthy streets objectives.
  • Data Analysis: Research and analyse available data sources related to road collisions and casualties to identify key issues and the opportunities to target road safety activities proactively to reduce both the number and the severity of collisions.
  • Road Safety Audits: Provide advice and support on Road Safety Audits, approving briefs and audit teams, and undertaking audits ensuring they are aligned with both statutory regulations and the principles of creating safer, healthier public spaces.
  • Collaborate Across Departments: Work closely with other teams within City Transport and across the Council to integrate road safety and Healthy Streets principles into wider transport and regeneration projects.
  • Partnership Working: Be involved in joint road safety projects with other local authorities, emergency services, communities and other organisations and stakeholders across the region who have a role within in a Safe Systems Approach.
  • Policy Development: Contribute to the creation and updating of road safety and healthy streets policies and technical guidelines, supporting the City Council’s broader objectives for transport, sustainability, and livability.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance with all Health, Safety, and Welfare policies as outlined by Bristol City Council.
  • Promote equality and diversity in all aspects of project delivery, modelling best practices across the service.
  • Maintain a high standard of work quality, adhering to current legislation and Council codes of conduct.
  • Complete mandatory training as required by the Council, ensuring you remain up-to-date with health, safety, and safeguarding policies.
