The single corporate service is delivered across both organisations. You may be based at either IWT or PHU and individuals may be required to undertake business travel between sites. For leaders managing staff across multi-site locations, you will need to be visible and provide in person leadership. The arrangements and frequency will be agreed locally.

Location: Working collaboratively with both the Isle of Wight NHS Trust and Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust (frequency of visits to each site, to be agreed locally)
We are seeking to appoint a dynamic, experienced and highly motivated Senior Research Sister/Charge Nurse, to work in close collaboration with Chief Investigators/Principal investigators/Sub Investigators and external partners. You will manage the delivery of a large portfolio of commercial and non-commercial research studies, to drive innovation, enhance patient care and maximise opportunities for our patients and staff to participate in high quality research. This post will be based within the Haematology/Oncology research nursing team, therefore a clinical background within an oncology setting would be advantageous.
The ideal candidate will have significant experience in managing/leading teams within the NHS setting and working in clinical research. You will join an enthusiastic, driven, and supportive senior research nursing team, to lead and develop established research teams of approximately 100 Research Nurses, AHPs, Midwives, Clinical Trials Assistants, Photographers and AI technicians, working together across sites and existing studies, to bring exciting research opportunities to PHU and IOW, for the benefit of our patients and for the future of healthcare.
Previous clinical research delivery experience in the NHS, commercially or within primary care is essential, as the post will require you to engage in clinical study delivery, (patient recruitment, retention and education) as well as team management (education, governance and workforce). You will require excellent leadership and management skills, be able to work to tight deadlines, manage resources and most importantly be able to bring out the best in your team. Robust clinical research knowledge of good clinical practice and awareness of the regulatory research landscape, and excellent communication skills are pivotal to facilitate successful research delivery across the Trust.
This full-time role will see you work closely with the departmental clinical leads, research management, researchers and delivery teams supporting and directing staff to contribute to the set-up and ongoing management of clinical and academic research trials within the haematology/oncology portfolio across the working week currently Monday to Friday (adaptable to meet service needs). You must be able to work autonomously, flexibly, have excellent communications skills, with the ability to lead, motivate and energise others. Driving licence is desirable but not essential.
This is a dynamic role that will offer the right candidate a unique opportunity to continue their leadership and management journey. You will be involved in all aspects of the research process from study design to delivery and study close out, collaboratively working with multidisciplinary teams and peers within PHU and IOW settings to support the implementation of studies to translate scientific discoveries into improved patient outcomes.
Key responsibilities- The role will see you ensure the effective delivery of a high standard of nursing care for all patients within the research pathway by providing clinical nursing leadership, direction, supervision and maintaining effective systems of work. Coordinate and expand teams research study portfolios, focusing on increasing both NIHR portfolio and commercial study activity.
- Manage assigned research teams, ensuring safe and effective staffing levels and the appropriate skill mix are maintained, including the co-ordination of leave and duty rosters. You will liaise closely with external partners, specialty research leads, the Trust’s research department, external regulatory agencies, and funding bodies to facilitate the delivery of high-quality research across designated clinical specialties.
- Through effective leadership you will plan, co-ordinate, implement and deliver clinical research activities across assigned teams in partnership with study investigators and research support teams, ensuring efficient and effective use of resources, working closely with the research finance team to ensure accurate recordkeeping of research appointments on departmental recruitment platforms to recover funding.
- At all times adhere to the NMC Code of Conduct, working within the research regulatory and legal frameworks for clinical trials (e.g., International Conference on Harmonisation of Good Clinical Practice in Clinical Trials (ICH-GCP), operating within the NMC Scope of Professional Practice).
- Support the Trust culture of collaborative, flexible cross-team working and commitment to delivering quality services and outcomes, which support the Government’s policies on public health.

Essential Qualifications and Experience- Current RN registration with NMC
- Masters degree, or equivalent experience and professional knowledge
- Professional clinical knowledge acquired through significant post registration experience, with a minimum of 3 year's experience in a Band 6 role
- Evidence of formal leadership training and continued CPD
- Significant clinical experience in managing & leading teams within an NHS setting
- Background in clinical research nursing, involvement in research/ clinical publications.
- Training in ICH-GCP clinical trial standards and the detailed trial-specific rules it provides for administration and record keeping.
- Management Training
- Teaching qualification or equivalent experience and knowledge.
Essential Skills and Knowledge- Knowledge of, and experience of applying, the Research Governance Framework for Health, and Social Care, and of clinical trial regulatory and ethics processes; knowledge of Medicines for Human Use (Clinical Trials) Regulations and Good Clinical Practice; knowledge of legislation regarding safety reporting and Pharmacovigilance.
- Demonstrates a clear understanding of advanced highly specialised theoretical and practical clinical and research skills beyond the normal scope of nursing practice.
