Job Description:

About the role:

We are looking to recruit a Senior Research Assistant in Quantum-Safe Cryptographic Implementations for Medical IoT. This position offers an exciting opportunity for a researcher with a strong background in FPGA-based cryptographic implementations. The successful candidate will contribute to cutting-edge research on quantum-safe cryptographic algorithms, focusing on implementing and optimising ML-KEM (Kyber) for legacy Medical IoT (MIoT) devices.

The role involves hands-on hardware development using Verilog, performance evaluation, and integration of cryptographic solutions within resource-constrained environments. This position is ideal for a candidate looking to expand their expertise in quantum-safe security while contributing to impactful healthcare applications.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct research on quantum-safe cryptographic algorithms, with an emphasis on ML-KEM implementations for FPGA-based MIoT devices.
  2. Develop and test lightweight cryptographic key exchange solutions using Verilog, including simulation, synthesis, and debugging with tools such as Xilinx Vivado or Intel Quartus Prime.
  3. Perform performance validation tests, measuring key metrics such as latency, power consumption, and memory usage, ensuring compatibility with NHS systems and HL7/FHIR protocols.
  4. Implement and evaluate cryptographic designs under resource-constrained conditions using specialist FPGA boards and simulation tools.
  5. Conduct literature and database reviews on quantum-safe cryptography, hardware security, and healthcare system integration to inform research direction.
  6. Write research reports and prepare presentations for internal teams, Health Innovation Manchester, and other stakeholders.
  7. Contribute to technical research reports, journal publications, and conference papers on quantum-safe cryptography in healthcare applications.
  8. Propose innovative solutions to adapt cryptographic techniques for constrained environments, resolving technical challenges and ensuring project milestones are met.

About you:

Essential Requirements for the role:

  1. MSc in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Cryptography, or a related field.
  2. Strong expertise in FPGA-based design and implementation, particularly for cryptographic applications.
  3. Proficiency in Verilog or VHDL and experience with FPGA design tools such as Xilinx Vivado or Quartus Prime.
  4. Knowledge of quantum-safe cryptographic algorithms, particularly ML-KEM (Kyber), and experience in optimising cryptographic solutions for hardware.
  5. Experience in performance validation, including power consumption and latency measurement.
  6. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  7. Excellent communication skills, including experience in writing research papers and technical reports.

Desirable Requirements for the role:

  1. Experience with healthcare system integration, including NHS standards, HL7, or FHIR protocols.
  2. Familiarity with lightweight cryptography for embedded or resource-constrained environments.
  3. Experience in working with industry stakeholders or research collaborations in the healthcare sector.
