Our Pharmacy Department are looking for an experienced hospital pharmacist, seeking new challenges in a clinically-orientated pharmacy service.

Main duties of the job

This will be a senior post responsible for leading on Governance, Education and Training

Ideally you will be an independent prescriber or be prepared to undergo the relevant training. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a specialist pharmacy team working closely with multi-disciplinary clinical teams including consultants, registrars, specialist nurse practitioners, dieticians and psychologists.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Be responsible for the management and delivery of Pharmacy education and training
  • Facilitate and deliver training and act as a designated supervisor for trainee and foundation level pharmacists
  • Develop education and training materials including reports relating to the management of the medicines in the Trust and undertake research and audit to support innovative practice and sustain robust medicines management systems and processes.
  • Manager related training provision to all operation staff within the Trust.
  • Support the department with clinical activities ensuring accuracy, legality, safety and efficacy of prescribed medication in line with local and national procedures
  • Support with pharmacy practice-based audit and research within the department.
  • Act as an operational lead in any relevant aspects of regulatory audit (internal and external).
  • Support the medication safety agenda, collaborate on monitoring system and provision of information to support a reduction in avoidable harm resulting from inappropriate medicines use across the Trust.
  • Work to deliver the medicines clinical governance plans which support safe and effective pharmacy and medicines optimisation services to patients. This involves close liaison with the medicines safety officer and multidisciplinary teams working across the Trust.
  • Lead serious incident reviews where appropriate and provide a quality assurance function for incident reviews involving medicines.
  • Support multidisciplinary teams to investigate incidents to enable the root cause to be understood and appropriate plans to be established to mitigate future risks.

Person specification

Education and qualifications

  • Master’s degree in pharmacy
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy or equivalent demonstrable experience
  • Registered as a pharmacist with The General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Keeping professionally up to date including CPD
  • Appropriate Research Qualification e.g. MSc in clinical pharmacy, or PhD
  • Risk management or clinical governance qualification
  • Qualified as a non-medical prescriber
  • Appropriate teaching qualification i.e. Member of Institute of Learning & Teaching or PGCE
  • Member of Royal Pharmaceutical Society

Experience

  • Significant and relevant post registration experience in NHS hospital pharmacy & clinical Pharmacy service delivery
  • Experience of medicines related policy & development
  • Highly experienced as qualified pharmacist
  • Experience of working across departmental and organisation boundaries to deliver specific targets and improve services for patients.
  • Working with outside commissioning and quality groups and understanding the requirements for a comprehensive quality and safety agenda.
  • Knowledge of financial systems and structures within the NHS
  • Knowledge of regulatory and licensing controls related to medicines
  • Demonstrates knowledge and application of the patient safety agenda relating to medicines
  • Experience in wider Trust delivery and implementation of risk reduction strategies e.g. NPSA medication alerts
  • Knowledge of NHS structures for Commissioning and Quality
  • Knowledge systems relating to medicines and patient safety.
  • Previous experience as an education and training pharmacist
  • Experience of managing a team
  • Experience of service development

Skills and Competencies

  • Understanding of clinical governance and its implications for service including quality and audit
  • Good communication, verbal and written skills e.g. SOPs & reports
  • Good clinical knowledge backed up by extensive ward/practice-based experience
  • Able to prioritise on workload, delegate appropriately and manage time effectively
  • Good IT skills (Excel, Word and PowerPoint)
  • Evidence of strategic planning ability
  • Able to deal with unpredictable workload including that associated with on-call
  • Deal calmly and appropriately with emotional situations related to complaints, incidents
  • Use of IT systems to generate reports, analysis or review of medicine usage
  • Knowledge of Codes of Practice / Customer Care / NHS plan for Pharmacy
  • Knowledge of wider NHS agenda and issues
