Job Title: Sr. Mechanical Engineer

Department: Product & Engineering

Reports To: Engineering Manager

FLSA Status: Exempt

Compensation Base Range: $115,000 to $130,000 Annually

ABOUT THE ROLE:

The Senior Engineer acts as a team lead, an individual contributor and a consultant to the engineering team, ensuring that the product development process is followed in its entirety. There is a gradual move away from CAD work and a shift toward mentorship responsibilities, including conducting deep dives into technical issues and fostering independence and creativity in the engineering team. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Focused on but not limited to:
  • Create detailed CAD models using SolidWorks.
  • Lead assigned projects to completion with complete ownership and minimal oversight.
  • Collaborate with Product Managers on defining customer and engineering requirements.
  • Schedule and lead effective meetings with cross functional teams.
  • Ability to set and achieve milestones and deadlines independently.
  • Attending trade shows to learn about competitor products and talk directly with customers.
  • Facilitate FMEA and Risk Analysis sessions for new and existing products.
  • Troubleshoot field issues originating from Customer Service and provide workable solutions to the customer.
  • Regularly engage with the Sustaining Engineering team to determine patterns or common issues with existing products.
  • Review tooling drawings with the manufacturer to ensure expectations are met.
  • Perform FEA simulations and calculations, when necessary, to review possible failure modes and compare the performance (e.g., stress, deflection, safety margin) of two or more solutions.
  • Complete tolerance analyses to verify 100% interoperability between parts.
  • Complete invention disclosure forms for intellectual property review.
  • Proven ability to deliver products on time with minimal oversight.
  • Work closely with the quality team to ensure manufacturers are adhering to requirements prior to pilot build.
  • Choose the right material for a part based on its functional needs and cost target.
  • Visit manufacturers at suitable times to review prototypes/samples, project/product schedule, and quality expectations.
  • Be willing to challenge manufacturing partners to improve or change current processes in the interest of higher quality or expanding manufacturing capabilities.
  • Conduct annual performance reviews and weekly 1:1s for those who report to you.
  • International travel 15% expected annually.

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals.   • Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply first principles to engineering problems including stress, strain, deflection and safety factors.
  • Drive the implementation of user-centric design and design-thinking principles.
  • Perform periodic audits of the Product Development Process for a given project, ensuring all required steps have been completed.
  • Perform departmental seminars (lunch-N-learns) to grow team members and expose them to new knowledge.
  • Introduction of processes and procedures.
  • Oversee engineering tasks on projects while driving products to completion.
  • Manage a small team and be responsible for their oversight.
  • Exemplary communication and demonstrated management acumen.
  • Provide technical leadership to the engineering team, offering guidance, mentorship, and fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Identify design, cost and schedule risks while simultaneously mitigating those risks through creative risk management. Ability to effectively lead projects and delegate tasks when more than one person is assigned.
  • SolidWorks, PDM, Microsoft Office, MathCAD, PLM, 3D printing, Free body diagrams, GD&T.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • You will be expected to work on your own projects while having up to 4 direct reports.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university in Mechanical Engineering or related Engineering field (master's degree is preferred).
  • Minimum 10 years of engineering experience and demonstrated track record of excellence in product design and development. Consumer product development a plus.
